Reformulating: iaitu, yakni, dengan kata lain in Malaysian Malay

Reformulators tell the reader how a second expression re-presents the first. Iaitu specifies exactly what a preceding category or expression refers to, yakni gives an exact or compact restatement, and dengan kata lain paraphrases the idea in different words. These markers connect discourse units; they are not predicate verbs equivalent to English is.

Reformulation differs from merely illustrating a claim; the example and elaboration guide treats misalnya, contohnya, and nonexhaustive lists.

Iaitu introduces exact specification

Iaitu commonly follows a general noun phrase and identifies its content, member, or intended referent.

Mesyuarat itu mempunyai satu tujuan utama, iaitu memilih pengerusi baharu.

The meeting has one main purpose, namely to choose a new chair.

Kami memerlukan dua dokumen, iaitu salinan pasport dan surat pengesahan majikan.

We need two documents, namely a passport copy and an employer's confirmation letter.

Program dwibahasa itu menggunakan dua bahasa, iaitu bahasa Melayu dan bahasa Inggeris.

The bilingual programme uses two languages, namely Malay and English.

A comma is natural when iaitu adds an appositional specification within a sentence. The material before it must establish something that can be specified: one purpose, two documents, a term, or a category.

💡
Read iaitu as “more exactly, the item(s) meant are...” If the second unit merely gives a similar easier explanation rather than identifying the exact referent, use dengan kata lain.

Iaitu is not a relative copula

English that is can be a reformulator, but English also uses that in relative clauses and is as a copula. Malay distributes these jobs. Yang introduces a relative modifier, ialah/adalah may link certain formal predicates, and iaitu specifies a discourse unit.

❌ Pegawai iaitu mengendalikan kes itu akan menghubungi anda.

Incorrect—iaitu cannot replace relative yang before a clause.

✅ Pegawai yang mengendalikan kes itu akan menghubungi anda.

The officer handling the case will contact you.

Nor should ialah iaitu be stacked before one definition. In Fotosintesis ialah proses..., ialah is a copular link; in Proses itu mempunyai satu keluaran, iaitu glukosa, iaitu specifies the output. The syntactic tasks differ.

The spelling yaitu is Indonesian-associated. Standard Malaysian prose uses iaitu.

⚠️ Terdapat satu syarat utama, yaitu pemohon mesti berumur sekurang-kurangnya lapan belas tahun.

Indonesian-associated yaitu is not the Standard Malaysian form.

✅ Terdapat satu syarat utama, iaitu pemohon mesti berumur sekurang-kurangnya lapan belas tahun.

There is one main condition, namely that applicants must be at least eighteen years old.

Yakni gives a compact exact restatement

Yakni overlaps substantially with iaitu and often appears in (formal/academic/literary) exposition. It can gloss a term or restate a proposition more compactly.

Kajian ini meneliti satu pemboleh ubah, yakni tahap kepercayaan pengguna.

This study examines one variable, namely the level of user trust. (academic)

Masalah sebenar ialah kegagalan menafsirkan data yang sudah ada, yakni kegagalan pada peringkat analisis, bukan pada peringkat pengumpulan.

The real problem is failure to interpret the available data, namely failure at the analysis stage rather than the collection stage. (formal)

Beliau memilih jalan yang paling sukar, yakni mengakui kesilapannya di hadapan semua ahli.

He chose the hardest course, namely admitting his mistake before all the members. (formal)

The second example has corrective force: it rejects one diagnosis and supplies the exact alternative. In ordinary conversation, maksudnya or iaitu may sound less elevated. Yakni should not be inserted simply to make prose appear academic.

Dengan kata lain paraphrases

Dengan kata lain literally means “in other words.” It re-expresses an idea so that the reader can process the same conclusion from a different formulation.

Kadar penyelesaian meningkat, tetapi jumlah kes baharu meningkat lebih cepat. Dengan kata lain, tunggakan masih bertambah.

The resolution rate increased, but new cases increased faster. In other words, the backlog is still growing.

Kontrak itu tidak diperbaharui. Dengan kata lain, perkhidmatan syarikat tersebut tamat pada hujung bulan ini.

The contract was not renewed. In other words, that company's service ends at the close of this month.

Sentence-initial Dengan kata lain, takes a following comma. Unlike iaitu, it can connect two complete sentences and translate a technical or indirect statement into a more accessible implication.

Model itu mempunyai kadar positif palsu yang tinggi. Dengan kata lain, sistem kerap menandai transaksi biasa sebagai transaksi mencurigakan.

The model has a high false-positive rate. In other words, the system often flags ordinary transactions as suspicious. (accessible reformulation)

The first sentence uses technical terminology; the second explains its practical meaning without pretending to define every detail of the statistical term.

Definition and list introduction

A formal definition can use a colon after a complete announcing clause, or a comma before an appositional iaitu phrase.

‘Tempoh bertenang’ mempunyai maksud berikut: tempoh yang membolehkan pengguna membatalkan kontrak tanpa penalti.

‘Cooling-off period’ has the following meaning: a period that allows a consumer to cancel a contract without penalty. (formal definition)

Tempoh bertenang ialah tempoh yang membolehkan pengguna membatalkan kontrak tanpa penalti.

A cooling-off period is a period that allows a consumer to cancel a contract without penalty.

The colon follows a complete announcement. Ialah serves as the formal nominal copula in the second sentence; adding iaitu after it would be redundant.

For a list, iaitu can follow a complete count or category:

Bengkel itu merangkumi tiga bidang, iaitu keselamatan siber, pengurusan data dan etika kecerdasan buatan.

The workshop covers three areas: cybersecurity, data management, and artificial-intelligence ethics.

Do not put a colon automatically after iaitu. Since iaitu itself introduces the specification, iaitu: is usually redundant in ordinary prose. Use either tiga bidang: keselamatan... or tiga bidang, iaitu keselamatan....

Correction and self-revision

For a precise correction, Malay can use atau lebih tepat “or more precisely,” maksud saya “I mean,” or a reformulator in a new clause.

Mesyuarat itu ditangguhkan—atau lebih tepat, dipindahkan ke minggu hadapan.

The meeting was postponed—or more precisely, moved to next week.

Kita perlu mengurangkan skop projek. Maksud saya, fasa pertama patut melibatkan dua daerah sahaja.

We need to reduce the project's scope. I mean, the first phase should involve only two districts.

Dengan kata lain normally preserves the original claim in a new form. Atau lebih tepat replaces an imprecise expression with a more exact one. Maksud saya manages spoken or lightly written self-repair. Choose according to whether the first wording remains valid.

💡
Paraphrase preserves the claim; correction revises it. Do not use dengan kata lain when the second statement actually contradicts and replaces the first.

Punctuation controls the relation

Use a comma before appositional iaitu/yakni and after sentence-initial Dengan kata lain,. Use a colon after a complete clause that announces a definition or list. A dash can dramatize a correction but should be used sparingly in formal prose.

Compare:

Kami memilih satu kaedah, iaitu temu bual berstruktur.

We selected one method, namely structured interviews.

Kami mempertimbangkan tiga kaedah: soal selidik, temu bual dan pemerhatian.

We considered three methods: questionnaires, interviews, and observation.

The comma makes the second phrase an appositional specification; the colon lets a complete announcement open into a list.

Common Mistakes

1. Importing Indonesian yaitu

⚠️ Kami memilih satu lokasi, yaitu dewan komuniti.

Indonesian-associated spelling in Malaysian prose.

✅ Kami memilih satu lokasi, iaitu dewan komuniti.

We chose one location, namely the community hall.

2. Using iaitu as a relative marker

❌ Buku iaitu saya pinjam sudah dipulangkan.

Incorrect—iaitu does not introduce an object relative.

✅ Buku yang saya pinjam sudah dipulangkan.

The book that I borrowed has been returned.

3. Stacking a copula and reformulator

❌ Matlamat utama ialah iaitu meningkatkan akses.

Redundant and ungrammatical stacking—choose one construction.

✅ Matlamat utama ialah peningkatan akses kepada perkhidmatan.

The main objective is increased access to services.

4. Treating a contradiction as a paraphrase

❌ Kos meningkat. Dengan kata lain, kos menurun.

Incorrect relation—the second claim contradicts rather than rephrases the first.

✅ Kos meningkat. Dengan kata lain, perkhidmatan itu kini lebih mahal.

Costs increased. In other words, the service is now more expensive.

5. Doubling iaitu and a colon

⚠️ Tiga dokumen diperlukan, iaitu: pasport, resit dan surat sokongan.

Redundant introduction in ordinary careful prose.

✅ Tiga dokumen diperlukan, iaitu pasport, resit dan surat sokongan.

Three documents are required: a passport, a receipt, and a supporting letter.

Key Takeaways

Use iaitu for exact appositional specification, yakni for a compact formal restatement, and dengan kata lain for a sentence-level paraphrase. These expressions connect discourse units rather than acting as relative markers or copulas. Malaysian prose uses iaitu, not Indonesian yaitu, and punctuation should distinguish apposition, list introduction, paraphrase, and correction.
