Stance Markers: menurut saya, sebenarnya, rupanya in Malaysian Malay

Stance markers show how a speaker relates to a claim. Menurut saya assigns an evaluation to the speaker, sebenarnya corrects an assumption or reveals the more accurate situation, and rupanya presents information as newly discovered or inferred. These markers distribute responsibility for knowledge; they are not interchangeable decorations meaning merely “I think.”

Menurut saya means “in my view/according to me.” It explicitly identifies the speaker as the source of an evaluation.

In my view, the second proposal is easier to implement with the available resources.

In my view, the report needs to explain the effect on part-time workers in greater detail.

At sentence start, it normally takes a comma. The claim remains open to disagreement because the marker presents it as the speaker's judgment rather than an impersonal fact.

Pada pendapat saya is a transparent neutral-formal alternative. In conversation, saya rasa often sounds more natural and can soften a proposal.

Saya rasa kita patut tunggu sehingga semua data diterima.

I think we should wait until all the data has been received. (neutral conversation)

💡
Use one clear viewpoint frame, then state the claim. Explicitly owning an evaluation can be polite because it leaves room for another participant's judgment.

With a person, report, or institution, menurut attributes information to that source.

Menurut laporan jabatan itu, kadar penggunaan meningkat sebanyak dua belas peratus.

According to the department's report, usage increased by twelve percent. (formal)

According to the officer on duty, the counter will reopen at two.

Attribution does not guarantee truth. It tells the reader who is responsible for the information and lets the writer distinguish reported evidence from personal observation. Menurut saya similarly identifies a source, but because that source is the speaker, it normally introduces opinion or analysis rather than external documentation.

Sebenarnya corrects an assumption

Sebenarnya means “actually/in fact” when the speaker replaces an inaccurate, incomplete, or expected account with a more accurate one.

Many people thought the meeting was cancelled. In fact, it was only moved to Friday.

I'm not actually from Johor; I was raised in Melaka. (neutral conversation)

The first uses sentence-initial Sebenarnya, with a comma to correct a proposition. The second places it later and sounds conversational, with the corrective focus on the speaker's origin.

Because correction can threaten another person's face, speakers often soften it:

Maaf, sebenarnya angka dalam jadual ini merujuk kepada suku ketiga, bukan keseluruhan tahun.

Sorry, actually the figures in this table refer to the third quarter, not the whole year.

Maaf and the precise contrast correct the record without portraying the other participant as careless.

Rupanya marks discovery or inference

Rupanya presents a state of affairs as something the speaker has just learned, noticed, or inferred from evidence. It often carries mild surprise.

Rupanya kedai itu tutup pada hari Isnin.

It turns out that the shop is closed on Mondays.

Saya menelefon beberapa kali tanpa jawapan. Rupanya telefonnya tertinggal di rumah.

I called several times without an answer. It turned out that she had left her phone at home.

The upstairs light was still on; apparently some staff were working late.

In the second example, later information explains the failed calls. In the third, visible evidence supports an inference. Rupanya does not claim the speaker knew the fact all along; it encodes a change in the speaker's information state.

Stronger narrative rupa-rupanya often introduces a reveal after suspense (narrative/informal-neutral):

Kami menyangka bunyi itu datang dari luar. Rupa-rupanya, seekor kucing terperangkap di dalam stor.

We thought the sound came from outside. As it turned out, a cat was trapped in the storeroom.

The reduplicated form is written with a hyphen. The narrative pacing guide develops its reveal function.

💡
Use sebenarnya when correcting the account; use rupanya when marking that the account has just become known. One manages truth against an assumption, while the other manages discovery.

One claim calibrated three ways

Suppose the second proposal is easier. Three frames assign different epistemic status.

In my view, the second proposal is easier to implement within the stipulated period. (opinion)

Sebenarnya, cadangan kedua lebih mudah dilaksanakan; anggaran kos pertama tersilap.

In fact, the second proposal is easier to implement; the first cost estimate was wrong. (correction)

Selepas mencuba kedua-duanya, rupanya cadangan kedua lebih mudah dilaksanakan.

After trying both, it turned out that the second proposal was easier to implement. (discovery/inference)

The propositional core stays similar. Menurut saya owns a judgment, sebenarnya rejects a contrary account, and rupanya records evidence-driven discovery. Choosing accurately helps readers understand why they should accept the claim.

Politeness and epistemic responsibility

Claims about another person's mistake require care. A personal frame can reduce dogmatism, while attribution can avoid presenting second-hand information as direct knowledge.

In my opinion, this section may need to be reorganized so that its argument is clearer. (polite feedback)

According to the technical team, the disruption was caused by cable damage. (attributed report)

The first combines one viewpoint marker with mungkin to calibrate advice. The second assigns factual responsibility to the technical team. Neither needs a stack of synonymous phrases.

Avoid redundant stacking

Menurut saya, pada pendapat saya, saya rasa... burdens one claim with three ownership markers. It does not make the opinion more polite or more reliable.

Redundant—three markers assign the same opinion to the speaker.

✅ Pada pendapat saya, jadual itu perlu diubah.

In my opinion, the schedule needs to be changed.

Different markers can coexist only when their scopes differ. Menurut laporan itu, sebenarnya kadar tersebut telah menurun attributes the data source while sebenarnya corrects a prior belief. Even then, the context must motivate both.

According to the audit report, in fact only two of the five complaints have been resolved. (attribution plus correction)

Punctuation and register

Sentence-initial Menurut saya, Sebenarnya, and Rupanya, often take a comma when they organize the entire proposition. Short integrated Rupanya dia sudah balik can omit the comma. Punctuation reflects whether the marker is a detached frame or part of the clause's flow.

Saya rasa is common (neutral/informal); menurut saya and pada pendapat saya suit careful discussion; source attribution with menurut laporan is common (formal/academic/journalistic). None is inherently more truthful.

Common Mistakes

1. Stacking opinion markers

❌ Pada pendapat saya, saya rasa menurut saya kita patut menunggu.

Redundant and difficult to process.

✅ Saya rasa kita patut menunggu keputusan rasmi dahulu.

I think we should wait for the official decision first.

2. Using sebenarnya without a correction

❌ Sebenarnya, pejabat itu mempunyai empat tingkap.

Unsupported discourse marker if no contrary belief or incomplete account is being corrected.

✅ Saya menyangka pejabat itu kecil. Sebenarnya, ruang dalamnya agak luas.

I thought the office was small. In fact, the interior is quite spacious.

3. Using rupanya for long-held knowledge

❌ Saya tahu sejak kecil bahawa rupanya ibu saya seorang guru.

Incoherent stance—rupanya presents the information as newly discovered.

✅ Saya baru mengetahui bahawa ibu Farid seorang guru; rupanya beliau mengajar di sekolah berhampiran.

I just learned that Farid's mother is a teacher; it turns out she teaches at a nearby school.

4. Presenting attribution as proof

Invalid inference—attributing a rumor does not establish certainty.

According to circulating rumors, it may have happened, but it has not been verified.

5. Omitting punctuation after a detached frame

❌ Menurut saya cadangan ini terlalu mahal.

Poor careful punctuation—a detached viewpoint frame normally takes a comma.

In my view, this proposal is too expensive to implement this year.

Key Takeaways

Use menurut saya to own an opinion, sebenarnya to correct an assumption, and rupanya to mark newly discovered or inferred information. Attribution assigns responsibility without guaranteeing truth. One well-chosen stance marker is usually more precise and polite than a stack of near-synonyms.
