A topic shift tells listeners or readers that the discourse is changing what it is about. Malaysian Malay offers a clear register ladder: spoken nah actively turns attention, mengenai neutrally frames a matter, soal foregrounds a question or issue, and elevated adapun introduces a formally organized subtopic. They are not interchangeable decorations.
Topic management works at paragraph and conversation level. The marker does not replace a grammatically complete clause; it names the frame in which the next claim should be interpreted. Punctuation makes that frame visible.
Nah: an audible spoken turn
Sentence-initial Nah, can gather attention and move a spoken explanation, meeting, or presentation to the next point (spoken/informal to neutral).
Nah, sekarang kita beralih kepada jadual pelaksanaan.
Right, now let's move on to the implementation schedule. (spoken presentation)
Nah, itu masalah pertama. Sekarang kita bincangkan soal kos pula.
Right, that's the first problem. Now let's discuss the question of cost. (spoken meeting)
The marker is pronounced as its own intonational unit, represented by a comma. It signals an active conversational pivot, comparable to English right, now, or well then in some contexts. Its force comes from delivery and shared attention.
Nah also has an interjectional use when handing something over—roughly “here!”—but that particle-level interpersonal meaning is outside this page. Here it organizes topic movement.
Because it evokes a speaking voice, nah is unsuitable as the narrator's connector in legal provisions, formal reports, and most academic prose. It can appear inside a transcript or direct quotation within those genres.
Mengenai: neutral “regarding”
Mengenai + noun phrase means “regarding/concerning.” At the beginning of a sentence, the phrase establishes a topic frame and normally takes a comma (neutral/formal).
Mengenai jadual pelaksanaan, beberapa tarikh masih perlu disahkan.
Regarding the implementation schedule, several dates still need to be confirmed.
Mengenai aduan pengguna, pihak pengurusan akan memberikan jawapan bertulis minggu depan.
Regarding user complaints, management will provide a written response next week. (formal)
The noun phrase after mengenai is obligatory: mengenai jadual, mengenai aduan, mengenai perkara tersebut. Bare sentence-initial Mengenai, leaves the relation incomplete.
Inside a clause, mengenai may introduce the topic selected by a predicate and no topic-frame comma is needed:
Kami menerima tiga pertanyaan mengenai kaedah pembayaran.
We received three questions regarding the payment method.
Here mengenai kaedah pembayaran modifies pertanyaan; it does not shift the whole paragraph. The same word participates in different structures, so initial position and punctuation matter.
Adapun: a formal or literary subtopic
Adapun means roughly “as for/with regard to.” It is written as one word and introduces a distinct subtopic in (formal/literary) organization.
Adapun cadangan pembinaan dewan baharu, perkara itu akan dibincangkan selepas kajian kos disiapkan.
As for the proposal to build a new hall, that matter will be discussed after the cost study is completed. (formal/literary)
Adapun peruntukan bagi fasa kedua, jumlahnya masih tertakluk pada kelulusan kementerian.
As for the allocation for the second phase, its amount remains subject to ministry approval. (formal)
Adapun X, ... presents X as an aboutness frame, often after an earlier item has been handled. It suits older expository prose, speeches, formal minutes, and consciously elevated organization. Contemporary reports may prefer mengenai, a heading, or direct subject wording because adapun can sound ceremonious.
It is not a casual hesitation sound. Saying Adapun... adapun... while searching for words misuses a formal topic organizer as an English-like filler.
Soal: foreground the issue
The noun soal means “question/issue/matter.” In an initial frame, Soal X, ... means “As for the issue of X...” and often makes the shift contrastive (neutral/spoken).
Soal kos, kita bincang selepas menerima sebut harga yang lengkap.
As for costs, we'll discuss them after receiving the complete quotations. (spoken/neutral)
Soal siapa yang bertanggungjawab belum dapat diputuskan hari ini.
The question of who is responsible cannot yet be decided today.
The first is a detached topic frame and takes a comma. In the second, soal siapa yang bertanggungjawab is the integrated subject, so no comma separates it from belum dapat diputuskan.
Pula often sharpens a parallel shift: Soal kos pula, ... means “As for costs, on the other hand/next...” This is useful after another issue has just been resolved.
Reka bentuknya sudah dipersetujui. Soal pembiayaan pula, kita masih menunggu keputusan bank.
The design has been agreed. As for financing, however, we are still waiting for the bank's decision.
A register ladder
| Marker | Typical setting | Effect | Punctuation |
|---|---|---|---|
| nah | spoken meeting/presentation | actively redirects attention | Nah, ... |
| soal X | speech and neutral discussion | foregrounds an issue, often contrastively | Soal X, ... when detached |
| mengenai X | neutral/formal speech and writing | frames a matter without strong drama | Mengenai X, ... |
| adapun X | formal/literary organization | opens a ceremonious distinct subtopic | Adapun X, ... |
The ladder is not a ranking of quality. Nah can be the best choice in a workshop, while adapun would sound stiff. Mengenai can be exact in a report, while repeated topic frames may be heavier than headings or direct subjects.
Parallel transitions in a meeting transcript
The following extract moves from schedule to budget and then staffing. Spoken markers make the transitions audible.
Pengerusi: Nah, jadual latihan sudah kita setujui. Soal kos pula, adakah bahagian kewangan sudah menerima sebut harga baharu? Pegawai: Belum. Mengenai jumlah peserta, kami menjangka kira-kira lapan puluh orang.
Chair: Right, we've agreed on the training schedule. As for costs, has the finance division received the new quotation? Officer: Not yet. Regarding participant numbers, we expect about eighty people. (meeting transcript)
Nah closes the first phase and redirects the room. Soal kos pula contrasts the next unresolved issue. The officer then uses neutral mengenai to introduce a related factual update. Formal adapun would be possible in highly ceremonial prepared remarks, but unnatural as a routine filler between turns.
Parallel transitions in a formal report
A written report can cover the same three topics with headings or formal frames.
Mengenai jadual latihan, semua tarikh telah dipersetujui oleh jawatankuasa. Adapun anggaran kos, dua sebut harga masih belum diterima. Mengenai jumlah peserta, urus setia menjangkakan penyertaan seramai kira-kira lapan puluh orang.
Regarding the training schedule, all dates have been agreed by the committee. As for the cost estimate, two quotations have not yet been received. Regarding participant numbers, the secretariat expects approximately eighty participants. (formal report)
The parallel mengenai phrases make two ordinary report topics easy to scan. Adapun gives the unresolved budget a more pronounced formal pivot. In a long document, three repeated frames may be better replaced with subheadings; cohesion should help navigation rather than advertise every sentence.
Paragraph organization and topic continuity
A topic frame normally governs the clause or paragraph immediately following it. If a paragraph moves from costs to staffing halfway through without a marker or repeated noun phrase, readers may attach later pronouns to the wrong topic.
Mengenai penyelenggaraan, kontraktor akan memeriksa semua lif pada minggu depan. Laporan pemeriksaan akan dibentangkan dalam mesyuarat bulan September.
Regarding maintenance, the contractor will inspect all lifts next week. The inspection report will be presented at the September meeting. (formal)
The second sentence continues the established maintenance topic and needs no new marker. Use a shift marker only when the aboutness frame changes, not before every sentence.
See Topic-Comment Order for the clause-level difference between a detached aboutness frame and an integrated subject.
Common Mistakes
1. Using adapun as a casual filler
❌ Adapun... saya rasa kita makan dulu, lepas itu baru sambung.
Register mismatch—adapun is not an ordinary hesitation filler in casual conversation.
✅ Hmm, saya rasa kita makan dulu, lepas itu baru sambung.
Hmm, I think we should eat first and continue after that. (informal)
2. Writing nah as a legal connector
❌ Nah, pemohon hendaklah mengemukakan dokumen asal dalam tempoh tujuh hari.
Inappropriate spoken pivot in legal prose.
✅ Mengenai dokumen sokongan, pemohon hendaklah mengemukakan dokumen asal dalam tempoh tujuh hari.
Regarding supporting documents, the applicant must submit the originals within seven days. (formal/legal)
3. Leaving mengenai without a complement
❌ Mengenai, pihak kami akan menjawab minggu depan.
Incomplete—mengenai requires the matter being framed.
✅ Mengenai permohonan tersebut, pihak kami akan memberikan jawapan minggu depan.
Regarding that application, we will provide an answer next week. (formal)
4. Adding a comma inside an integrated subject
❌ Soal pembiayaan, belum dapat diselesaikan.
Incorrect for the intended integrated subject—the comma wrongly separates subject from predicate.
✅ Soal pembiayaan belum dapat diselesaikan kerana dua pihak masih berunding.
The financing issue cannot yet be resolved because two parties are still negotiating.
5. Repeating a shift marker without changing topic
❌ Mengenai latihan, tarikhnya sudah ditetapkan. Mengenai latihan, tempatnya juga sudah ditempah.
Needlessly repetitive—the second sentence continues the same topic.
✅ Mengenai latihan, tarikhnya sudah ditetapkan dan tempatnya juga sudah ditempah.
Regarding the training, its date has been set and its venue has also been booked.
Key Takeaways
Use spoken Nah, to redirect live attention, Mengenai X, for a neutral or formal topic frame, Adapun X, for an elevated distinct subtopic, and Soal X, for an issue-centered, often contrastive shift. Register is central: the marker suitable for a meeting transcript may be wrong in a legal document. A following comma marks a detached topic frame, but an integrated subject such as Soal pembiayaan belum selesai takes no comma.
