Viewpoint Adverbials in Malaysian Malay

A viewpoint adverbial tells the listener whose perspective licenses a claim or within which domain the claim should be judged. Compare a bare assertion, Cadangan itu praktikal “The proposal is practical,” with Menurut saya, cadangan itu praktikal “In my opinion, the proposal is practical.” The second speaker explicitly accepts responsibility for the evaluation instead of presenting it as an uncontested fact.

Contemporary Standard Malaysian Malay offers several frames that English may translate as “in my opinion,” but their functions are not identical. Menurut saya attributes a judgment to a source, bagi saya evaluates something in relation to the speaker, and secara peribadi separates a personal response from an institutional or public position. Domain frames such as dari segi kewangan restrict the criterion by which the claim is true.

The three central speaker frames

FrameCore functionUsual registerNatural English equivalent
menurut sayaattributes the following judgment to the speakerneutral to formalin my opinion; according to me
bagi sayapresents an evaluation as applying to the speakerneutral, very common in speechfor me; as far as I am concerned
secara peribadicontrasts a personal stance with an official, professional, or collective oneneutral to formalpersonally; in a personal capacity

Menurut literally establishes a source or authority. With a third-person noun it means “according to”: menurut laporan itu “according to that report.” With saya, it marks the speaker as the source of a judgment.

Menurut saya cadangan itu wajar dipertimbangkan semula.

In my opinion, that proposal deserves to be reconsidered.

Menurut laporan Bank Negara Malaysia, inflasi dijangka kekal sederhana.

According to the Bank Negara Malaysia report, inflation is expected to remain moderate.

The evidential use with a report is not merely an opinion marker: it attributes information and lets the reader assess the source. In edited writing (formal), a comma often follows a longer fronted source phrase, as in the second example. A short opening frame does not require a comma automatically; punctuation follows information flow and readability rather than an English rule that every initial adverbial must be detached.

Pada pendapat saya is another established, explicit “in my opinion” frame (neutral to formal). It is often slightly more deliberative than bagi saya.

Pada pendapat saya, pelaksanaan dasar itu perlu dibuat secara berperingkat.

In my opinion, the policy should be implemented in stages.

Bagi saya: relevance and evaluation

Bagi saya is especially natural when the speaker evaluates difficulty, importance, acceptability, or personal impact. It does not claim that the statement is universally true.

Bagi saya perjalanan dua jam itu terlalu jauh untuk dibuat setiap hari.

For me, a two-hour journey is too far to make every day.

Bagi penduduk di kawasan itu, bekalan air bersih lebih mendesak daripada projek baharu.

For residents in that area, a clean water supply is more urgent than a new project.

The second example shows that bagi is not limited to saya. It establishes the group relative to whom an evaluation holds. English learners sometimes overuse menurut here, but a resident's needs are being assessed for that group, not quoted according to it.

Secara peribadi: contrasting roles

Use secara peribadi when the distinction between personal and official capacity matters. Without such a contrast, the phrase may sound heavier than English conversational “personally.”

Secara peribadi saya menyokong program itu, tetapi keputusan rasmi akan dibuat oleh jawatankuasa.

Personally, I support the programme, but the official decision will be made by the committee.

Beliau bercakap secara peribadi, bukan sebagai wakil kementerian.

She was speaking in a personal capacity, not as a ministry representative.

The first instance has scope over the whole proposition: the support is personal. The second modifies the manner or capacity of speaking. This overlap is why manner with secara matters: secara peribadi can frame either a claim or the capacity in which an action is performed.

Choose menurut saya when the issue is “whose judgment?”, bagi saya when it is “for whom is this true or important?”, and secara peribadi when it is “in which capacity am I speaking?”

Domain restriction: true from which angle?

Not every viewpoint is a person. Malay can restrict a claim to an analytical domain with dari segi “in terms of,” dari sudut “from the perspective of,” secara plus an adjective, or dalam konteks “in the context of.” These frames prevent a limited claim from being misread as absolute.

Dari segi kewangan projek itu berisiko, tetapi dari segi sosial manfaatnya besar.

Financially, the project is risky, but socially its benefits are substantial.

Dari sudut undang-undang, perjanjian lisan itu masih boleh menimbulkan kewajipan tertentu.

From a legal perspective, that oral agreement can still create certain obligations.

Secara teknikal sistem itu berfungsi, namun pengalaman penggunanya masih lemah.

Technically, the system works, but its user experience is still poor.

Dalam konteks sekolah luar bandar, cadangan itu memerlukan penyesuaian.

In the context of rural schools, that proposal requires adaptation.

Fronting these frames makes the restriction active before the reader processes the claim. Final placement is possible, but it often sounds like a qualification added afterward:

Penyelesaian itu boleh diterima dari segi kos.

That solution is acceptable in terms of cost.

This sentence does not necessarily say the solution is acceptable ethically, environmentally, or operationally. Viewpoint scope is therefore a logical boundary, not decorative wording.

Fronting and accountability

Viewpoint expressions most often come first because the listener should know the ground rules before evaluating the proposition. Compare:

Menurut saya keputusan itu tidak adil.

In my opinion, the decision is unfair.

Keputusan itu, menurut saya, tidak adil.

The decision is, in my opinion, unfair.

The medial version is marked and parenthetical (formal/written). It interrupts the assertion to limit responsibility after the topic has already been named. The initial version is the safer default in both speech and writing.

Fronting also supports civil disagreement. Instead of directly declaring another person's position wrong, the speaker presents an accountable alternative viewpoint.

Saya faham alasan itu, tetapi bagi saya keselamatan pengguna mesti diutamakan.

I understand that reasoning, but for me, user safety must come first.

This softens the social action without weakening the content. The stance remains clear.

One issue in formal and casual discussion

Consider whether a city should restrict private cars in its centre.

Formal meeting:

Dari sudut kesihatan awam, pengurangan trafik boleh meningkatkan kualiti udara. Namun, menurut saya pelaksanaannya perlu disertai pengangkutan awam yang lebih baik.

From a public-health perspective, reducing traffic can improve air quality. However, in my opinion, implementation must be accompanied by better public transport.

Casual conversation:

Bagi saya idea itu bagus, tapi bas kena lebih kerap dulu.

I think the idea is good, but the buses need to run more often first.

The second sentence contains tapi and kena (informal), natural in Malaysian conversation. The viewpoint frame itself, bagi saya, remains standard. The formal version distinguishes a domain-based claim from the speaker's implementation judgment.

Avoid redundant stacks

Malay has many stance and viewpoint devices, but more framing is not more precise. Pada pendapat saya, menurut saya, bagi saya... repeats the same ownership signal three times. Likewise, secara peribadi bagi saya is usually redundant unless two genuine contrasts are being constructed.

Menurut saya cadangan itu terlalu mahal.

In my opinion, the proposal is too expensive.

If both source and domain matter, combine different functions rather than synonyms:

Menurut saya, dari segi kos cadangan itu sukar dipertahankan.

In my opinion, in cost terms, the proposal is difficult to defend.

This is legitimate: menurut saya identifies the responsible speaker, while dari segi kos restricts the criterion. For more on the order of multiple frames, see ordering multiple adverbials.

Common Mistakes

1. Stacking equivalent opinion frames

❌ Pada pendapat saya, menurut saya cadangan ini sesuai.

Incorrectly overloaded — both expressions mark the same speaker judgment.

✅ Pada pendapat saya, cadangan ini sesuai.

In my opinion, this proposal is suitable.

2. Calquing English for me with untuk saya

❌ Untuk saya perjalanan itu terlalu jauh untuk ulang-alik setiap hari.

Incorrect for the intended viewpoint — untuk saya means intended for me, not for me as an evaluator.

✅ Bagi saya perjalanan itu terlalu jauh untuk saya ulang-alik setiap hari.

For me, that journey is too far to commute every day.

3. Contradicting the capacity marked by secara peribadi

❌ Secara peribadi saya bercakap bagi pihak kementerian.

Contradictory — secara peribadi denies the official representative capacity asserted by bagi pihak kementerian.

✅ Saya bercakap bagi pihak kementerian, bukan secara peribadi.

I am speaking on behalf of the ministry, not in a personal capacity.

4. Forgetting that a domain frame limits the claim

❌ Dari segi kos projek itu baik dalam semua aspek.

Logically inconsistent — a cost frame cannot support a claim about every aspect.

✅ Dari segi kos projek itu baik, tetapi kesan alam sekitarnya masih perlu dinilai.

In cost terms, the project is good, but its environmental impact still needs evaluation.

Key Takeaways

  • Menurut saya attributes a judgment, bagi saya marks personal relevance, and secara peribadi contrasts personal with official capacity.
  • Domain adverbials state the criterion within which a claim is valid.
  • Initial placement makes responsibility and scope clear before the proposition arrives.
  • Combine frames only when they perform genuinely different functions.
  • Malay punctuation follows information flow: do not insert a comma after every short initial frame by English habit.
