tanya, bertanya, and menanyakan: Verb Family and Usage in Malaysian Malay

The tanya family distributes a question across three possible centers. Bertanya profiles the person asking, usually with an addressee introduced by kepada. Menanyakan takes the requested information as its direct object. Passive ditanya centers the person questioned, whereas ditanyakan centers what was asked about. Pertanyaan and tanda tanya are established nouns.

English ask hides these valency differences: ask the teacher, ask the address, and the teacher was asked use one verb. Malay affixes and complements make the questioner, addressee, or information structurally visible. General formation belongs to the voice system.

Saya bertanya kepada guru tentang tarikh peperiksaan.

I asked the teacher about the examination date.

Mereka akan menanyakan keputusan permohonan itu esok.

They will ask about the result of the application tomorrow.

The verbs do not acquire endings equivalent to asks or asked. Bare tanya is not an infinitive; it is a root licensed in particular constructions and registers.

tanya in commands and conversation

Bare tanya is natural in imperatives and casual Malaysian speech (informal). The person asked can follow directly.

Tanya pegawai di kaunter itu; mungkin dia tahu prosedurnya.

Ask the officer at that counter; perhaps she knows the procedure.

Saya dah tanya dia, tapi dia belum jawab.

I've asked him, but he hasn't answered yet. (informal)

In careful prose, Saya sudah bertanya kepadanya or a more specific Saya sudah menanyakan perkara itu kepadanya makes the participant roles explicit.

bertanya: the act and the addressee

Bertanya is intransitive or prepositional. It can stand alone for the activity of asking, then introduce the addressee with kepada and the subject matter with tentang/mengenai.

Jangan takut untuk bertanya jika arahan itu kurang jelas.

Do not be afraid to ask if the instructions are unclear.

Pelajar itu bertanya kepada pensyarah tentang kaedah analisis data.

The student asked the lecturer about the data-analysis method.

Wartawan bertanya mengenai jadual baharu perkhidmatan kereta api.

Reporters asked about the railway service's new schedule.

The information can also be a direct content question: Dia bertanya bila mesyuarat akan bermula. Here bila... is the content, while no addressee is stated.

Dia bertanya bila mesyuarat akan bermula.

She asked when the meeting would begin.

menanyakan: requested information as object

Menanyakan is transitive. Its direct object is the information, status, address, price, health, or matter being asked about. The addressee can follow in a kepada phrase.

Pelancong itu menanyakan alamat muzium kepada pemandu bas.

The tourist asked the bus driver for the museum's address.

Saya menelefon klinik untuk menanyakan waktu operasi pada hari Sabtu.

I called the clinic to ask about its opening hours on Saturday.

Dia menanyakan khabar ibu saya selepas pembedahan.

She asked after my mother's condition following the operation.

Compare bertanya kepada guru, where the teacher is the addressee, with menanyakan alamat, where the address is the sought information. Menanyakan guru would normally mean ask about the teacher, not ask the teacher.

💡
After menanyakan, look for the information requested. To name the person receiving the question, add kepada: menanyakan alamat kepada pegawai.

ditanya and ditanyakan

Passive ditanya makes the person questioned the subject. The question itself may follow as quoted speech or a content clause.

Guru itu ditanya oleh ibu bapa tentang perubahan jadual kelas.

The teacher was questioned by parents about the change to the class schedule.

Apabila ditanya mengapa dia lewat, Amir menunjukkan tayar motosikalnya yang pancit.

When asked why he was late, Amir showed his flat motorcycle tire.

Passive ditanyakan instead centers the issue or information.

Perkara itu sudah ditanyakan kepada pegawai bertugas pagi tadi.

That matter was already put to the duty officer this morning.

Soalan yang sering ditanyakan ialah cara memohon bantuan tersebut.

A frequently asked question is how to apply for that assistance.

Write both prefixes solid. Ditanya di pejabat contains attached passive di- and separate locative di pejabat.

pertanyaan, soalan, and tanda tanya

Pertanyaan means an act or item of inquiry, especially in service, formal, or administrative contexts: sebarang pertanyaan, pertanyaan lanjut. Soalan is the ordinary noun for a question in conversation, tests, and many general contexts. They overlap, but their collocations differ.

Untuk sebarang pertanyaan lanjut, sila hubungi pejabat daerah.

For any further inquiries, please contact the district office. (formal)

Soalan terakhir dalam ujian itu agak sukar.

The last question in the test was rather difficult.

Tanda tanya literally means question mark. Metaphorically, it names an unresolved doubt or uncertainty.

Kelewatan projek itu masih menjadi tanda tanya dalam kalangan penduduk.

The project's delay remains a question mark among residents.

The punctuation mark itself is written ?, but the lexical noun remains two words.

Common Mistakes

1. Making the addressee the object of menanyakan

❌ Saya menanyakan guru tentang tarikh peperiksaan.

Wrong valency for asking the teacher—the direct object of menanyakan is normally the information.

✅ Saya bertanya kepada guru itu tentang tarikh peperiksaan akhir.

I asked that teacher about the final examination date.

2. Adding kepada before the information object

❌ Pelancong itu menanyakan kepada alamat muzium.

Incorrect roles—alamat is the information and follows menanyakan directly.

✅ Pelancong tersebut menanyakan alamat muzium kepada pemandu bas.

The tourist asked the bus driver for the museum's address.

3. Using ditanyakan for the person questioned

❌ Guru itu ditanyakan oleh ibu bapa tentang jadual kelas.

Wrong passive center—the teacher is the addressee, so use ditanya.

✅ Guru itu ditanya oleh ibu bapa tentang jadual kelas.

The teacher was asked by parents about the class schedule.

4. Separating passive di-

❌ Perkara itu sudah di tanyakan kepada pegawai.

Incorrect spelling—the passive prefix is attached.

✅ Perkara itu sudah ditanyakan kepada pegawai bertugas.

That matter has already been put to the duty officer.

5. Treating tanda tanya as one derived word

❌ Puncanya masih menjadi tandatanya.

Incorrect standard spelling—the noun phrase tanda tanya is written separately.

✅ Puncanya masih menjadi tanda tanya bagi pasukan penyiasat.

Its cause remains a question mark for the investigation team.

Key Takeaways

Use bertanya to profile the act or questioner and kepada to introduce the addressee. Use menanyakan when the requested information is the direct object. Ditanya centers the person questioned; ditanyakan centers the matter raised. Pertanyaan is common for an inquiry, soalan for a general or test question, and tanda tanya is written as two words.
