از دست دادن az dast dâdan: to Lose

از دست دادن is the ordinary predicate for losing possession, access, control, an opportunity, or a person through death. It is a fixed compound built from prepositional از دست and inflected دادن: فرصت را از دست دادم “I lost the opportunity.” The lost entity is a direct object and, when definite, normally takes را.

The literal wording evokes something leaving one’s hand, but modern speakers use the expression as a single lexical predicate. Its range is not identical to English “lose.” A temporarily misplaced key is usually گم کردن, while losing a job, time, balance, a chance, or a loved one is از دست دادن. When no loser is profiled, Persian strongly favors intransitive از دست رفتن “be lost, go to waste.”

be dalil-e ta'khir, parvâz-e sobh râ az dast dâdam.

Because of the delay, I missed the morning flight. (neutral standard)

nemi-khâham in forsat-e nâder râ az dast be-daham.

I do not want to lose this rare opportunity. (neutral standard; subjunctive)

The company has lost several important customers in the past three months. (formal business register)

A direct object: what is lost

The object normally precedes the fixed predicate. An indefinite object may remain unmarked: فرصتی را is possible when specific, but فرصت از دست دادن can describe the general experience of losing an opportunity.

bâ ân eshtebâh e'temâd-e bakhsh-e bozorgi az tim râ az dast dâd.

With that mistake, he lost the trust of a large part of the team. (neutral standard)

agar tamarkoz-at râ az dast dâdi, chand daqiqe esterâhat kon.

If you lose concentration, take a break for a few minutes. (neutral spoken standard)

Common objects form semantic clusters:

DomainFrequent objectsTypical English
access/opportunityفرصت، شغل، مقام، حقlose/miss a chance, job, position, right
capacity/controlتعادل، کنترل، تمرکز، حافظهlose balance, control, focus, memory
resourcesوقت، پول، انرژیlose/waste time, money, energy
life/peopleجان، دوست، یکی از نزدیکانlose one’s life/a loved one
💡
Treat از دست as part of the predicate, not as a freely chosen source phrase. The direct object names what becomes unavailable; از does not mark that object.

Literal image and lexical meaning

The hand image motivates loss of possession or control, but modern usage is strongly lexicalized. وقت را از دست دادن can mean letting valuable time slip away, and پرواز را از دست دادن corresponds to English “miss a flight.”

rânande barâ-ye lahze-i kontrol-e khodro râ az dast dâd.

The driver lost control of the car for a moment. (neutral/news register)

bahs-e far'i na-konim; dârim vaqt râ az dast mi-dahim.

Let’s not get sidetracked; we are losing time. (neutral spoken standard; ongoing loss)

The progressive is natural when loss unfolds incrementally. Simple past instead packages the loss as a completed change. This aspectual difference is especially clear with customers, support, control, or time.

Losing a person

کسی را از دست دادن is a conventional, tactful way to say that someone died or that a relationship was irretrievably lost. With family members it usually implies death unless context supplies another interpretation. It is neutral and respectful, not a slang euphemism.

u pedar-ash râ dar kudaki az dast dâde bud.

She had lost her father in childhood. (neutral respectful register)

dar ân hâdese chand khânevâde yeki az nazdikân-eshân râ az dast dâdand.

In that accident, several families lost a loved one. (formal/news register)

Internal clitics

An accessible object may attach to The clitic belongs semantically to the whole predicate, not to literal “hand.” A full object and an internal clitic should not normally be doubled in neutral prose.

sâl-hâ dust-am bud, ammâ bâ yek su'-tafâhom az dast-ash dâdam.

He was my friend for years, but I lost him over a misunderstanding. (neutral spoken standard)

in forsat dubâre pish nemi-âyad; az dast-ash nade.

This opportunity will not come again; do not miss it. (neutral spoken standard)

See Clitics inside Light Verb Constructions for the wider host pattern.

Intransitive از دست رفتن and other alternatives

When the lost entity is the subject and the loser is absent or irrelevant, use This is the idiomatic passive-like counterpart. Productive *از دست داده شدن is structurally interpretable but heavy and normally avoided.

bâ qat'-e barq, bakhshi az dâde-hâ-ye sabt-na-shode az dast raft.

When the power failed, some of the unsaved data was lost. (neutral technical register)

agar emruz tasmim na-girim, in forsat az dast mi-ravad.

If we do not decide today, this opportunity will be lost. (formal-neutral)

For a physical object that cannot currently be located, گم کردن / گم شدن is usually more exact. Losing legal possession, access, or the object permanently can favor There is no one-word rule: the speaker’s construal—misplacement versus deprivation—matters.

kelid-hâ-yam râ jâyi dar khâne gom karde-am.

I have misplaced my keys somewhere in the house. (neutral; گم کردن for an unlocated object)

💡
Choose by perspective: من فرصت را از دست دادم profiles the loser; فرصت از دست رفت profiles the lost opportunity; کلید گم شد profiles an unlocated physical object.

Tehran speech

Everyday Tehran reduces دادن to forms such as میدم، میدی، میده، میدین، میدن (informal, regional: Tehran). Past دادم remains stable. Object را becomes رو, and نده is the ordinary negative command.

age alân râh na-yoftim, qatâr ro az dast midim.

If we don’t leave now, we’ll miss the train. (informal, regional: Tehran)

Common Mistakes

1. Stacking the two predicates for ordinary misplacement

Incorrect — do not combine گم کردن and از دست دادن; ordinary physical misplacement takes گم کردن.

kelid-hâ-ye yadaki râ dar otâq-e kâr gom kardam.

I misplaced the spare keys in the study.

2. Omitting را from a definite lost object

Incorrect — the definite object آخرین فرصت requires را.

bâ in ta'khir âkharin forsat râ ham az dast dâdim.

With this delay, we lost our last opportunity too.

3. Building the present from داد

Incorrect — present دادن uses stem ده; داد belongs to the past system.

u bâ in raftâr e'temâd-e hame râ az dast mi-dahad.

With this behavior, he is losing everyone’s trust.

4. Replacing the lexical intransitive with شدن

Incorrect — the idiomatic intransitive predicate is از دست رفتن, not از دست شدن.

be dalil-e bi-tasmimi forsat-e mohemmi az dast raft.

An important opportunity was lost because of indecision.

5. Changing the fixed preposition

Incorrect for ‘lost control’ — the lexical predicate requires

rânande ru-ye yakh kontrol-e khodro râ az dast dâd.

The driver lost control of the car on the ice.

Key Takeaways

  • The lost entity is a direct object; an identified object normally takes را.
  • از دست دادن covers deprivation, missed opportunities, lost control, and bereavement; physical misplacement usually uses گم کردن.
  • Use از دست رفتن when the lost entity is the subject and no loser is profiled.
  • Internal clitics attach to
