Persian verbal prefixes attach to the finite verbal host in a fixed morphological order. می marks imperfective or habitual viewpoint; negative نـ precedes it to form نمی; affirmative subjunctive/imperative بـ normally appears where می does not. English learners often treat these pieces as movable words and place them before the whole compound predicate, after the stem, or together in impossible combinations.
The central repair is to locate the element that actually inflects. In a simple verb it is the lexical stem; in کار کردن it is light verb کردن; in a verb with lexical preverb برـ, the preverb precedes the negative/imperfective complex. Then apply the required spelling.
The Ordering Map
| Environment | Standard pattern | Example |
|---|---|---|
| present indicative | می + present stem + ending | میخوانم |
| negative present | ن + می + present stem + ending | نمیخوانم |
| affirmative subjunctive | ب + present stem + ending | بخوانم |
| negative subjunctive | ن + present stem + ending | نخوانم |
| lexical preverb + indicative | preverb + می + stem | برمیگردم |
| lexical preverb + negative | preverb + نمی + stem | برنمیگردم |

Error Type 1: Treating می as a Separate Adverb
In standard orthography می attaches with a ZWNJ. It comes immediately before the present or past stem, not before an object or the nonverbal element of a compound.
❌ من هر روز می کتاب میخوانم.
Incorrect — می cannot stand before the object کتاب; it belongs on the finite verb.
✅ من هر روز در راه برگشت کتاب میخوانم.
man har ruz dar râh-e bargasht ketâb mi-khânam.
I read on the way home every day.
❌ خواهرم در خانه کارمیکند.
Incorrect standard spacing — کار is the nonverbal element and must remain separate from inflected میکند.
✅ خواهرم بیشتر روزها در خانه کار میکند.
khâhar-am bishtar-e ruz-hâ dar khâne kâr mi-konad.
My sister works from home most days.
The lexical compound is کار کردن, but that does not make its two written words one orthographic word. The prefix attaches inside the predicate to the light verb.
Error Type 2: Reversing نـ and می
Present and past imperfective negatives begin نمی. The negative prefix has wider scope than imperfective می, so the order is ن + می, not می + ن.
❌ امروز گوشت مینخورم.
Incorrect standard prefix order — modern Persian uses نمیخورم.
✅ امروز گوشت نمیخورم؛ غذای گیاهی سفارش میدهم.
emruz gusht na-mi-khoram; ghazâ-ye giyâhi sefâresh mi-daham.
I'm not eating meat today; I'll order a vegetarian meal.
❌ قبلا این مسیر را مینشناختم.
Incorrect — negative imperfective is نمیشناختم, with نـ before می.
✅ قبلا این مسیر کوتاه را نمیشناختم.
qablan in masir-e kutâh râ na-mi-shenâkhtam.
I didn't know this short route before.
Error Type 3: Combining ب and می for One Mood
Affirmative بـ and imperfective می are not two obligatory pieces of every present form. The ordinary present indicative uses میروم; the present subjunctive after a licensor such as باید uses بروم. بمیروم does not combine their meanings.
❌ باید فردا زود بمیروم.
Incorrect — باید licenses the present subjunctive بروم, not ب + میروم.
✅ باید فردا پیش از ساعت هفت بروم.
bâyad fardâ pish az sâ'at-e haft be-ravam.
I have to leave before seven tomorrow.
Some frequent forms have phonologically or lexically conditioned shapes, including بیا، برو، بگو، بده. Learn these as verified forms, not as evidence that prefixes can be moved freely.
Error Type 4: Keeping ب in the Negative Subjunctive
Modern standard Persian normally replaces affirmative subjunctive بـ with negative نـ. Thus affirmative بخوانم contrasts with negative نخوانم, and برویم with نرویم. Persian does not stack the two prefixes as نبخوانم.
❌ بهتر است این بخش را نبخوانی.
Incorrect in modern standard Persian — negative subjunctive uses نخوانی without ب.
✅ بهتر است این بخش را فعلا نخوانی.
behtar ast in bakhsh râ fe'lan na-khâni.
It is better not to read this section for now.
Compare a valid indicative and subjunctive. Both are grammatical, but they answer different questions:
⚠️ امروز این فصل را نمیخوانم.
emruz in fasl râ na-mi-khânam.
I'm not reading this chapter today. Valid indicative: a present plan or fact, not the dependent subjunctive ‘that I not read.’
✅ ممکن است امروز این فصل را نخوانم.
momken ast emruz in fasl râ na-khânam.
I may not read this chapter today. (subjunctive under ممکن است)
Error Type 5: Ignoring a Lexical Preverb
In verbs such as برگشتن “return,” برـ is part of the lexical verb. Imperfective می follows it: برمیگردد. Negative نـ then precedes می but follows the lexical preverb: برنمیگردد. In the affirmative subjunctive/imperative, an extra بـ is normally absent: برگردد، برگرد.
❌ او تا شنبه نمیبرگردد.
Incorrect — the lexical preverb برـ must precede نمی.
✅ او تا شنبه از سفر برنمیگردد.
u tâ shanbe az safar bar-na-mi-gardad.
He/She won't return from the trip until Saturday.
❌ لطفا ببرگرد و در را ببند.
Incorrect — برگرد already contains the lexical preverb; do not add another بـ.
✅ لطفا برگرد و چراغ راهرو را خاموش کن.
lotfan bar-gard va cherâgh-e râhro râ khâmush kon.
Please go back and turn off the hallway light.
Error Type 6: Losing the ZWNJ
The written forms میروم، نمیآید، برمیگردد use a ZWNJ at the productive می boundary. Pronunciation does not excuse typing the prefix solid or leaving an ordinary space.
❌ جلسه امروز برگزار نمیشود.
Incorrect standard spelling — نمی must be joined to شود with a ZWNJ.
✅ جلسهی امروز به دلیل قطعی برق برگزار نمیشود.
jalase-ye emruz be dalil-e qat'i-ye bargh bargozâr na-mi-shavad.
Today's meeting will not be held because of the power outage.
Everyday Tehran speech reduces many forms, but (informal, regional: Tehran) pronunciation does not redefine the standard written prefix order. A message may omit a ZWNJ in casual typing; edited prose should not.
Common Mistakes
1. Prefixing the whole compound
❌ من می تصمیم میگیرم.
Incorrect — only the light verb receives imperfective می.
✅ من بعد از دیدن هزینهها تصمیم میگیرم.
man ba'd az didan-e hazine-hâ tasmim mi-giram.
I'll decide after seeing the costs.
2. Using indicative morphology after a subjunctive licensor
⚠️ شاید فردا میآیم.
shâyad fardâ mi-âyam.
Possible when the speaker presents the arrival as relatively settled, but not the intended uncertain event in careful standard Persian; use بیایم for that reading.
✅ شاید فردا برای تحویل کلید بیایم.
shâyad fardâ barâ-ye tahvil-e kelid biyâyam.
Maybe I'll come tomorrow to hand over the key.
3. Moving negation to the nonverbal noun
❌ ما نه تصمیم گرفتیم شرکت کنیم.
Incorrect for simple verbal negation — نـ belongs on گرفتیم.
✅ ما تصمیم نگرفتیم در مسابقه شرکت کنیم.
mâ tasmim na-gereftim dar mosâbeqe sherkat konim.
We did not decide to enter the competition.
Key Takeaways
- Locate the finite verbal host before attaching any prefix.
- Use نمی, never مینـ, for negative imperfective forms.
- Do not stack affirmative subjunctive بـ with indicative می.
- Negative subjunctive normally uses نـ instead of بـ.
- Put lexical preverbs before می/نمی: برمیگردم، برنمیگردم.
- Preserve the ZWNJ in edited standard Persian.
