Conjugating Both Parts of a Compound Verb

In a Persian compound verb such as کمک کردن “help,” تصمیم گرفتن “decide,” or عوض شدن “change,” the whole expression supplies the lexical meaning, but only the light verb carries tense, mood, negation, person, and number. English learners sometimes treat both pieces as verbs, attach agreement to the noun or adjective, or mistake the nonverbal element for an ordinary direct object.

The useful principle is asymmetric: one predicate, two components, one inflectional host. Keep کمک، تصمیم، عوض stable; inflect کردن، گرفتن، شدن. Then check the whole predicate's complements, because its meaning is not always the sum of two freely combined words.

Find the Inflectional Host

💡
To conjugate a compound, temporarily bracket both components: [تصمیم] [می‌گیرم]. Everything that expresses tense, person, mood, or negation belongs in the second bracket.

For the underlying lexical structure, see Compound Verbs as Single Lexical Predicates.

Error Type 1: Adding Person Marking to the Noun

A noun inside a compound does not agree with the subject. من کمک کردم، ما کمک کردیم differ only in the ending on کردن. A suffix on کمک would normally be interpreted as a possessive or object clitic, not verbal agreement.

❌ من به همکارم کمکم کردم.

Incorrect for ‘I helped my colleague’ — ـم on کمک is not first-person verbal agreement and creates an unintended clitic reading.

✅ من به همکارم در تنظیم جدول کمک کردم.

man be hamkâr-am dar tanzim-e jadval komak kardam.

I helped my colleague organize the table.

❌ ما برای سفر تصمیمیم گرفتیم.

Incorrect — تصمیم remains unchanged; first-person plural is marked by ـیم on گرفتیم.

✅ ما برای سفر زمستانی تصمیم گرفتیم.

mâ barâ-ye safar-e zemestâni tasmim gereftim.

We decided about the winter trip.

Error Type 2: Pluralizing the Nonverbal Element with a Plural Subject

Subject number affects the light verb, not the lexical noun. آن‌ها تماس گرفتند means “they called”; plural تماس‌ها would refer to multiple calls as countable nouns in a different construction.

❌ آن‌ها با دفتر تماس‌ها گرفتند.

Incorrect for a single compound predicate — plural subject does not pluralize تماس.

✅ آن‌ها صبح با دفتر بیمه تماس گرفتند.

ân-hâ sobh bâ daftar-e bime tamâs gereftand.

They called the insurance office in the morning.

The independent noun remains possible when multiple calls themselves are counted: تماس‌های زیادی گرفتیم can mean “we received many calls,” where تماس‌ها is an object and گرفتن has its full lexical meaning. Context and modifiers reveal the different analysis.

Error Type 3: Inflecting an Adjectival Component

Persian adjectives do not agree for person, number, or gender. In خسته شدن, only شدن changes. English speakers may import agreement expectations from another language or mistake خسته for a participial verb form.

❌ بچه‌ها بعد از پیاده‌روی خسته‌ها شدند.

Incorrect — خسته is a stable adjectival component, not a plural noun agreeing with بچه‌ها.

✅ بچه‌ها پس از گردش کنار دریا خسته شدند.

bachche-hâ pas az gardesh-e kenâr-e daryâ khaste shodand.

The children got tired after walking around by the sea.

❌ من از این انتظارها خسته‌ام شدم.

Incorrect — خسته‌ام is already a copular predicate ‘I am tired’; it cannot also serve as the unchanged element before شدم.

✅ من از این همه انتظار خسته شدم.

man az in hame entezâr khaste shodam.

I got tired of all this waiting.

Error Type 4: Treating the Lexical Element as an Ordinary Object

کار کردن means “work,” while کاری را کردن means “do a particular task.” Object marking can therefore create a grammatical sentence with a different structure and meaning.

⚠️ من کار را کردم و زود رفتم.

man kâr râ kardam va zud raftam.

I did the task and left early. Valid Persian, but کار را is a specific object; it does not simply mean ‘I worked.’

✅ من تا ساعت پنج کار کردم و بعد رفتم.

man tâ sâ'at-e panj kâr kardam va ba'd raftam.

I worked until five and then left.

This contrast is lexical. Some nonverbal elements can be modified, counted, or marked with را in more compositional uses. That does not turn all compounds into free object-plus-verb sequences. Objects and را with Compound Verbs develops the diagnostics.

💡
Ask whether را picks out an independently referential thing. If it does, you may have an object plus a full verb rather than the same lexical compound.

Error Type 5: Moving the Light Verb Away Without a Discourse Reason

The two components need not be absolutely adjacent: objects, clitics, focus, and relative syntax create established separations. Nevertheless, neutral prose keeps the nonverbal element close to its light verb. English SVO does not license arbitrary insertion between them.

⚠️ مدیر تصمیم درباره‌ی بودجه دیروز گرفت.

modir tasmim darbâre-ye budje diruz gereft.

Possible only with marked information structure, but unnatural as the intended neutral order: the long درباره phrase and دیروز separate the compound's components.

✅ مدیر دیروز درباره‌ی بودجه تصمیم گرفت.

modir diruz darbâre-ye budje tasmim gereft.

The director made a decision about the budget yesterday.

A modified nominal element can behave more independently: تصمیم دشواری گرفت “made a difficult decision.” This is not subject agreement on تصمیم; ـی belongs to the noun phrase.

✅ هیئت پس از سه ساعت بحث تصمیم دشواری گرفت.

hey'at pas az se sâ'at bahs tasmim-e doshvâri gereft.

After three hours of discussion, the panel made a difficult decision. (valid modified nominal component)

Error Type 6: Putting Prefixes on the Nonverbal Element

Aspectual می‌ and negative نـ attach to the light verb. Standard spelling also requires a ZWNJ after می‌/نمی‌.

❌ من به این برنامه می عادت کنم.

Incorrect — subjunctive morphology belongs on کنم; می is neither correctly placed nor spelled.

✅ امیدوارم زود به برنامه‌ی جدید عادت کنم.

omidvâr-am zud be barnâme-ye jadid âdat konam.

I hope I get used to the new schedule soon.

❌ هنوز نتیجه را اعلام نمیکنند.

Incorrect standard spelling — negative imperfective is نمی‌کنند with a ZWNJ.

✅ هنوز نتیجه‌ی نهایی را اعلام نمی‌کنند.

hanuz natije-ye nahâyi râ e'lâm na-mi-konand.

They still are not announcing the final result.

Whole-Lemma Meaning and Light-Verb Choice

The light verb is not freely interchangeable. تصمیم گرفتن means “decide,” تصمیم دادن is not its synonym; پیشنهاد دادن means “suggest,” while پیشنهاد شدن means “be proposed” in suitable contexts. Changing the light verb can change voice, valency, or the entire lexical entry.

❌ من به او کمک گرفتم.

Incorrect for ‘I helped him/her’ — the established predicate is کمک کردن with به.

✅ من به او کمک کردم فرم را درست پر کند.

man be u komak kardam form râ dorost por konad.

I helped him/her fill out the form correctly.

Common Mistakes

1. Translating two English verbs into two Persian inflections

❌ ما شروعیم کردیم کار را.

Incorrect — شروع کردن is one predicate; شروع takes no person ending.

✅ ما کار را ساعت نه شروع کردیم.

mâ kâr râ sâ'at-e noh shoru' kardim.

We started work at nine.

2. Changing the light verb by analogy

⚠️ او یک پیشنهاد خوب گرفت.

u yek pishnehâd-e khub gereft.

Valid Persian for ‘He/She received a good suggestion/offer,’ but not for ‘made a suggestion’; that meaning uses پیشنهاد دادن.

✅ او برای کاهش هزینه‌ها پیشنهاد خوبی داد.

u barâ-ye kâhesh-e hazine-hâ pishnehâd-e khubi dâd.

He/She made a good suggestion for reducing costs.

3. Reading every suffixed noun as verbal agreement

⚠️ در «تصمیمی گرفتیم»، ـی شناسه‌ی اول‌شخص جمع است.

dar «tasmimi gereftim», -i shenâse-ye avval-shakhs-e jam' ast.

A grammatical but false analysis: in تصمیمی گرفتیم, ـی marks the noun as indefinite; ـیم on گرفتیم marks first-person plural.

✅ در پایان جلسه تصمیم تازه‌ای گرفتیم.

dar pâyân-e jalase tasmim-e tâze-i gereftim.

At the end of the meeting, we made a new decision.
