Persian را does not mean “object.” It differentially marks direct objects that the discourse treats as identifiable, definite, or sufficiently specific. A bare nonspecific object often appears without it: کتاب خریدم can mean “I bought a book/books” or “I did some book-buying,” whereas کتاب را خریدم means “I bought the book/the relevant book.”
English marks both noun phrases by position after the verb. That makes English speakers add را to every Persian object. The repair is semantic and syntactic: first confirm that the phrase is a direct object; then ask how individuated it is in the conversation.
The Diagnostic Map
| Noun phrase | Typical marking | Interpretation |
|---|---|---|
| pronoun, proper name, demonstrative NP | normally را | highly identifiable |
| definite/recoverable NP | normally را | speaker expects identification |
| specific indefinite NP | را often possible/expected | one particular referent matters |
| bare nonspecific object | normally no را | type or activity foregrounded |
| prepositional complement/predicate noun | no object-marking را | not a direct object |
For the full system, see Differential Object Marking with را. This page diagnoses overmarking.
Error Type 1: Marking a Nonspecific Bare Object
Bare objects often describe an activity or desired type rather than one discourse-tracked entity. چای خوردن، کتاب خواندن، خانه خریدن are neutral without را when no particular tea, book, or house has been selected.
⚠️ من معمولا صبحها قهوه را میخورم.
man ma'mulan sobh-hâ qahve râ mi-khoram.
Grammatical if قهوه is a particular identifiable coffee, but not the intended general habit.
✅ من معمولا صبحها قهوه میخورم و عصرها چای مینوشم.
man ma'mulan sobh-hâ qahve mi-khoram va asr-hâ chây mi-nusham.
I usually drink coffee in the mornings and tea in the evenings.
⚠️ دیروز کتاب را خریدم.
diruz ketâb râ kharidam.
I bought the book yesterday. Valid Persian, but it presupposes an identifiable book; it is not the neutral answer ‘I bought a book.’
✅ دیروز برای سفر کتاب خریدم.
diruz barâ-ye safar ketâb kharidam.
Yesterday I bought a book/books for the trip. (number and identity backgrounded)
The warning pair is crucial: overusing را may produce a perfectly grammatical sentence whose presupposition is wrong.
Error Type 2: Assuming Indefinite Means “Never را”
Avoiding overuse does not mean deleting را from every indefinite. A speaker may have one particular referent in mind even if the listener has not encountered it. A relative clause often helps individuate that referent.
❌ مقالهای که دیروز گفتی پیدا کردم.
Incomplete for the intended specific direct object in careful standard Persian — the identified article naturally takes را.
✅ مقالهای را که دیروز معرفی کردی پیدا کردم.
maqâle-i râ ke diruz mo'arrefi kardi peydâ kardam.
I found an article that you recommended yesterday. (specific indefinite object)
Specificity is not identical to English definiteness. Persian can mark “a certain article” with را because the speaker is tracking that individual. See Specific Indefinites with ی plus را.
Error Type 3: Letting Animacy Decide Automatically
Animate objects are often specific because conversations track people closely, but animacy is a tendency, not the rule. A nonspecific role can remain bare; a specific inanimate object can require را.
⚠️ برای بخش فروش مترجم را لازم داریم.
barâ-ye bakhsh-e forush motarjem râ lâzem dârim.
Grammatical if a particular translator is already identifiable, but not for the intended nonspecific role.
✅ برای بخش فروش مترجم باتجربه لازم داریم.
barâ-ye bakhsh-e forush motarjem-e bâ-tajrobe lâzem dârim.
We need an experienced translator for the sales department. (nonspecific animate object)
❌ کلیدی که روی میز بود برداشتم.
Incorrect for the contextually identified object in careful standard Persian — the relative description singles out the key.
✅ کلیدی را که روی میز بود برداشتم.
kelidi râ ke ru-ye miz bud bardâshtam.
I picked up the key that was on the table. (specific inanimate object)
Error Type 4: Adding را to a Prepositional Complement
را marks a direct object, not every English complement. If Persian selects به، از، با، دربارهی, that preposition already builds the relation. Do not append را to it.
❌ به دوستم را دربارهی تغییر برنامه گفتم.
Incorrect — به دوستم is a prepositional recipient, not a را-marked direct object.
✅ تغییر برنامه را به دوستم گفتم.
taghyir-e barnâme râ be dust-am goftam.
I told my friend about the schedule change. (content is the direct object; recipient has به)
❌ من به این موضوع را فکر میکنم.
Incorrect — فکر کردن selects به for this meaning; the topic is not a direct object.
✅ من هنوز به پیشنهاد تو فکر میکنم.
man hanuz be pishnehâd-e to fekr mi-konam.
I'm still thinking about your proposal.
Error Type 5: Treating a Compound's Nonverbal Element as an Object
In lexical کمک کردن، کار کردن، تماس گرفتن, the noun contributes to the predicate and does not automatically take را. Adding it may be impossible or create a different compositional reading.
❌ همکارم به من کمک را کرد.
Incorrect — کمک is the stable nonverbal element of کمک کردن, not its direct object.
✅ همکارم به من کمک کرد گزارش را زودتر تمام کنم.
hamkâr-am be man komak kard gozâresh râ zud-tar tamâm konam.
My colleague helped me finish the report sooner.
Not every noun next to کردن is incorporated. آن کار را کردم contains a demonstratively identifiable object and means “I did that task.” Learn the predicate and discourse reading before deciding.
Error Type 6: Putting را Inside the Noun Phrase
را follows the nominal core of the direct object, including plural marking, adjectives, and possessors. With a following relative clause, it commonly appears after the antecedent and before که, as in کتابی را که.... It does not separate a noun from its adjective or possessor.
❌ نسخه را جدید گزارش را برای مدیر فرستادم.
Incorrect — را cannot split نسخه from adjective جدید, and it appears only once after the whole object phrase.
✅ نسخهی جدید گزارش را برای مدیر فرستادم.
noskhe-ye jadid-e gozâresh râ barâ-ye modir ferestâdam.
I sent the new version of the report to the director.
The correct form also illustrates standard ezâfe spelling after silent ه: نسخهی, with Persian yeh and a ZWNJ. Arabic ي or an ordinary space is not an acceptable edited substitute.
❌ نسخه ي نهایی را چاپ کردم.
Incorrect standard orthography — Arabic ي and an ordinary space do not form Persian هی.
✅ نسخهی نهایی قرارداد را برای بایگانی چاپ کردم.
noskhe-ye nahâyi-ye qarârdâd râ barâ-ye bâygâni châp kardam.
I printed the final version of the contract for the archive.
Discourse Can Change the Same Noun
At the start of a conversation, ماشین میخواهم may mean “I want a car.” Once two cars have been compared, ماشین را میخواهم points to the relevant one. The noun's dictionary meaning did not change; its discourse status did.
اول مدلهای موجود را دیدم؛ در نهایت ماشین آبی را انتخاب کردم.
avval model-hâ-ye mowjud râ didam; dar nahâyat mâshin-e âbi râ entekhâb kardam.
First I looked at the available models; in the end I chose the blue car. (both objects are identifiable)
Common Mistakes
1. Equating “object” with را
⚠️ من هر شب موسیقی را گوش میدهم.
man har shab musiqi râ gush mi-daham.
Grammatical for particular familiar music, but not the intended general activity of listening to music.
✅ من هر شب هنگام آشپزی موسیقی گوش میدهم.
man har shab hengâm-e âshpazi musiqi gush mi-daham.
I listen to music every night while cooking.
2. Equating را with English “the”
⚠️ چون انگلیسی حرف تعریف نامعین دارد، «کتابی» هیچوقت را نمیگیرد.
chun englisi harf-e ta'rif-e nâmo'ayyan dârad, «ketâbi» hich-vaqt râ na-mi-girad.
A grammatical but false transfer rule: a specific indefinite object can take را in Persian.
✅ کتابی را پیدا کردم که مدتها دنبالش بودم.
ketâbi râ peydâ kardam ke moddat-hâ donbâl-ash budam.
I found a book that I had been looking for for a long time.
3. Letting plural marking force را
⚠️ برای مهمانی چند صندلی را آوردیم.
barâ-ye mehmâni chand sandali râ âvardim.
Grammatical if the chairs form a particular tracked set, but not for the intended nonspecific quantity.
✅ برای مهمانی چند صندلی از انبار آوردیم.
barâ-ye mehmâni chand sandali az anbâr âvardim.
We brought several chairs from storage for the party.
Key Takeaways
- را marks discourse-individuated direct objects, not every object.
- Leave bare nonspecific and activity-like objects unmarked.
- Definite objects strongly favor را; specific indefinites can also take it.
- Animacy influences specificity but never replaces the discourse test.
- Prepositional complements and compound-verb elements are not automatically direct objects.
- Place را after the entire noun phrase, with standard Persian orthography.
