The Persian infinitive tells you the past stem reliably—remove final ـن from رفتن to get رفت—but it does not reliably predict the present stem رو. English-speaking learners therefore create forms such as میرفم by attaching present endings to the visible infinitive stem. The repair is lexical: learn every new verb as infinitive + present stem, then build the finite form around the correct stem.
This is a correction clinic, not a new paradigm. For the formation rules, review The Present Stem. Here the aim is to identify exactly why a plausible-looking form fails.
Diagnose the Layer That Is Wrong
A present indicative normally has می + present stem + person ending. A present subjunctive normally has بـ + present stem + ending, while an imperative also uses the present stem. If the prefix and ending are correct but the middle is wrong, changing the ending will not repair the verb.
| Infinitive | Past stem | Present stem | Present 1sg | Imperative 2sg |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| رفتن | رفت | رو | میروم | برو |
| نوشتن | نوشت | نویس | مینویسم | بنویس |
| دیدن | دید | بین | میبینم | ببین |
| گرفتن | گرفت | گیر | میگیرم | بگیر |
| گفتن | گفت | گو | میگویم | بگو |
Error Type 1: Extending the Past Stem into the Present
English has many verbs whose present and past differ only by an ending. Persian often changes the stem itself. رفتـ belongs in رفتم and میرفتم; the present uses رو.
❌ من هر روز با مترو میرفم.
Incorrect — رفت is the past stem; present indicative ‘I go’ needs رو.
✅ من سه روز در هفته با اتوبوس به کتابخانه میروم.
man se ruz dar hafte bâ otobus be ketâbkhâne mi-ravam.
I go to the library by bus three days a week.
⚠️ از این پنجره کوهها را میدیدم.
az in panjare kuh-hâ râ mi-didam.
Valid Persian for ‘I used to/could see the mountains from this window,’ but not for the intended present meaning; میدیدم is past imperfective.
✅ از این پنجره کوهها را میبینم.
az in panjare kuh-hâ râ mi-binam.
I can see the mountains from this window.
The second bad example contains a real Persian verb form, but it expresses “I was seeing/used to see.” This is why a stem error can be more dangerous than nonsense: the listener may recover a different tense.
Error Type 2: Choosing Another Verb's Real Stem
نوشتن “write” has present stem نویس; نوشیدن “drink” has نوش. Their resemblance makes مینوشم a common false analogy. The result is grammatical morphology attached to the wrong lexical stem.
⚠️ من هر شب چای مینوشم.
man har shab chây mi-nusham.
I drink tea every night. This is valid Persian, but مینوشم means ‘I drink,’ not ‘I write.’
✅ من هر شب چند خط در دفترم مینویسم.
man har shab chand khat dar daftar-am mi-nevisam.
I write a few lines in my notebook every night.
Error Type 3: Carrying the Infinitive Ending into a Finite Verb
The infinitive دانستن is a citation form. Its present stem is دان, followed directly by a person ending: میدانم، میدانی، میدانند. The sequence ـستن does not survive in the present.
❌ جواب این سؤال را میدانستمم.
Incorrect — the learner has kept past-stem material and added a second person ending.
✅ جواب این سؤال را میدانم، اما دلیلش را نه.
javâb-e in so'âl râ mi-dânam, ammâ dalil-ash râ na.
I know the answer to this question, but not the reason.
The same principle applies to توانستن, whose present stem is توان: write میتوانم, not a form built mechanically from توانست.
⚠️ فردا میتوانستم زودتر بیایم.
fardâ mi-tavânestam zud-tar biyâyam.
Grammatical in a suitable counterfactual context, but not the intended statement of current ability; میتوانستم means ‘I could.’
✅ فردا میتوانم نیم ساعت زودتر بیایم.
fardâ mi-tavânam nim sâ'at zud-tar biyâyam.
Tomorrow I can come half an hour earlier.
Error Type 4: Forgetting That Compounds Use the Light Verb's Stem
In تصمیم گرفتن, the lexical meaning comes from the whole compound, but finite morphology belongs to گرفتن. Its present stem is گیر: تصمیم میگیرم. The nominal element تصمیم does not supply a new stem.
⚠️ ما معمولا جمعهها تصمیم میگرفتیم.
mâ ma'mulan jom'e-hâ tasmim mi-gereftim.
Valid Persian for a past habit, ‘we used to make decisions on Fridays,’ but not for the intended present habit.
✅ ما معمولا جمعهها برای هفتهی بعد تصمیم میگیریم.
mâ ma'mulan jom'e-hâ barâ-ye hafte-ye ba'd tasmim mi-girim.
We usually make decisions for the following week on Fridays.
This diagnosis generalizes: find the light verb's infinitive, retrieve its present stem, and leave the nonverbal element stable. Compound-verb structure is reviewed on Compound Verbs as Single Lexical Predicates.
Error Type 5: Guessing from One Similar Infinitive
Shared endings do not guarantee shared stem changes. The present stems of خواندن، ماندن، راندن, and رساندن are respectively خوان، مان، ران, and رسان. By contrast, آمدن has the highly irregular present stem آی. Memorize frequent pairs and verify unfamiliar ones.
❌ خواهرم ساعت هشت به خانه میآمدد.
Incorrect — آمد is not the present stem, and the ending has been doubled.
✅ خواهرم ساعت هشت به خانه میآید.
khâhar-am sâ'at-e hasht be khâne mi-âyad.
My sister comes home at eight.
Error Type 6: Correct Stem, Wrong Orthography
Standard written Persian joins productive می to the verb with a ZWNJ. Typing it solid or with an ordinary space does not change the stem, but it is still an orthographic failure.
❌ من هر روز یادداشت مینویسم.
Incorrect standard spelling — می requires a ZWNJ before نویسم.
✅ من هر روز پیش از جلسه یادداشت مینویسم.
man har ruz pish az jalase yâddâsht mi-nevisam.
I write notes every day before the meeting.
Colloquial Tehran pronunciation may reduce endings or vowels, but ordinary formal spelling still uses the standard stem and ZWNJ. Do not respell میخواهم as its casual pronunciation unless a page explicitly teaches colloquial writing.
Common Mistakes
1. Trusting the past stem for present time
⚠️ الان جواب را میگفتم.
alân javâb râ mi-goftam.
Grammatical as a conditional or context-dependent past form, but not for the intended simple present ‘I am saying the answer now.’
✅ الان جواب را با صدای بلند میگویم.
alân javâb râ bâ sedâ-ye boland mi-guyam.
I'm saying the answer aloud now.
2. Learning only the infinitive
⚠️ چون مصدر دیدن است، حتما میدیدم یعنی «میبینم».
chun masdar didan ast, hatman mi-didam ya'ni «mi-binam».
A grammatical but false analysis: infinitive shape does not determine the present stem or tense.
✅ دیدن را با بن مضارع بین یاد میگیرم.
didan râ bâ bon-e mozâre'-e bin yâd mi-giram.
I learn دیدن together with the present stem بین.
3. Using the right stem with the wrong person ending
❌ آنها هر هفته به ما سر میزنم.
Incorrect — the plural subject requires third-person plural ـند.
✅ آنها هر هفته به پدربزرگشان سر میزنند.
ân-hâ har hafte be pedarbozorg-eshân sar mi-zanand.
They visit their grandfather every week.
Key Takeaways
- Store verbs as infinitive + present stem, especially frequent irregular pairs.
- The past stem builds past forms; it cannot be reused mechanically in the present.
- The present stem also underlies subjunctives and imperatives.
- In a compound predicate, retrieve the light verb's present stem.
- A real but unintended stem can silently change tense or lexical meaning.
- After choosing the stem, check person agreement and standard ZWNJ spelling separately.
