بودن budan “to be” is the most structurally irregular verb in Persian. Its past uses stem بودـ, its subjunctive and imperative use باشـ, its present copula appears as enclitic endings or است, and the full هستـ set often emphasizes existence, presence, or contrast. The negative present has its own نیستـ forms.
English uses one lexeme—be—but also has the irregular set am, is, are, was, were. Persian distributes even more work across several historical stems. Memorizing بودن = budan without the five current sets leaves the most useful forms unexplained.
Principal parts and their jobs
| Item | Form | Main job |
|---|---|---|
| infinitive | بودنbudan | “to be”; verbal noun |
| past stem | بودـbud- | simple past and past auxiliary |
| past participle | بودهbude | perfect forms |
| subjunctive/imperative stem | باشـbâsh- | باشم، باش، باشید |
| full present set | هستـhast- | existence, presence, emphasis; also copular |
| negative present set | نیستـnist- | “am/is/are not” |
There is no productive present میبودم meaning ordinary “I am,” and میهستم is not standard. Present predication normally uses a copular ending, است, or هستـ.
Present copula: endings, است, and هستـ
| Person | Enclitic/copular form | Full هست form |
|---|---|---|
| I | خستهامkhaste-am | هستمhastam |
| you singular | خستهایkhaste-i | هستیhasti |
| he/she/it | خسته استkhaste ast | هستhast |
| we | خستهایمkhaste-im | هستیمhastim |
| you plural/polite | خستهایدkhaste-id | هستیدhastid |
| they | خستهاندkhaste-and | هستندhastand |
The enclitic set is the neutral choice for identity and properties. هستـ is natural for location and existence, and it can add contrast to a property: خسته هستم، ولی بیمار نیستم “I am tired, but I am not ill.” Third-singular است is written separately after most words; the other copular endings attach according to Persian orthography. Their attachment rules are introduced on The Enclitic Present Copula.
من دانشجوی معماریام و خواهرم پزشک است.
man dâneshju-ye me'mâri-am-o khâhar-am pezeshk ast.
I am an architecture student, and my sister is a doctor. (neutral written standard; identity with enclitic and است copulas)
کلیدها روی میز کنار پنجره هستند.
kelid-hâ ru-ye miz-e kenâr-e panjare hastand.
The keys are on the table by the window. (neutral standard; location with full هست form)
در این محله یک نانوایی شبانهروزی هست.
dar in mahalle yek nânvâyi-ye shabâne-ruzi hast.
There is a twenty-four-hour bakery in this neighborhood. (neutral; existential هست)
Negative present: نیستـ
| Person | Form | Reading |
|---|---|---|
| I | نیستم | nistam |
| you singular | نیستی | nisti |
| he/she/it | نیست | nist |
| we | نیستیم | nistim |
| you plural/polite | نیستید | nistid |
| they | نیستند | nistand |
نیست replaces the affirmative copula; it is not نـ + است written as two words and does not take imperfective می.
امروز در دفتر نیستم؛ از خانه کار میکنم.
emruz dar daftar nistam; az khâne kâr mi-konam.
I am not at the office today; I am working from home. (neutral standard)
این نسخه کامل نیست، اما برای شروع کافی است.
in noskhe kâmel nist, ammâ barâ-ye shoru' kâfi ast.
This copy is not complete, but it is enough to begin. (neutral standard; negative and affirmative copulas contrasted)
Simple past: بودـ plus endings
| Person | Form | Reading |
|---|---|---|
| I | بودم | budam |
| you singular | بودی | budi |
| he/she/it | بود | bud |
| we | بودیم | budim |
| you plural/polite | بودید | budid |
| they | بودند | budand |
Third-singular simple past has no extra ـد after the past stem: بود, not بودد. Negation is regular نـ + بودـ: نبودم، نبودی، نبود، نبودیم، نبودید، نبودند.
جلسهی دیروز کوتاه بود، ولی تصمیم نهایی مهم بود.
jalase-ye diruz kutâh bud, vali tasmim-e nahâyi mohem bud.
Yesterday's meeting was short, but the final decision was important. (neutral standard; third-singular past copula)
وقتی تماس گرفتی، ما هنوز در راه بودیم.

ân shab hich tâksi-i jelow-ye istgâh na-bud.

Subjunctive and imperative: باشـ
| Person | Present subjunctive | Reading |
|---|---|---|
| I | باشم | bâsham |
| you singular | باشی | bâshi |
| he/she/it | باشد | bâshad |
| we | باشیم | bâshim |
| you plural/polite | باشید | bâshid |
| they | باشند | bâshand |
Unlike most subjunctives, باشـ normally has no added بـ: باشم, not بباشم. Imperatives are باش and باشید; negatives are نباش and نباشید.
ممکن است فردا تمام روز در کتابخانه باشم.
momken ast fardâ tamâm-e ruz dar ketâb-khâne bâsham.
I may be at the library all day tomorrow. (neutral; first-singular present subjunctive)
آرام باش و اجازه بده حرفش را تمام کند.

negarân na-bâshid; natije tâ asr âmâde mi-shavad.

Perfect, past-perfect, and future auxiliary uses
The participle بوده combines with present copular endings for the present perfect. In the third singular, standard writing uses بوده است.
| Person | Present perfect of بودن |
|---|---|
| I | بودهامbude-am |
| you singular | بودهایbude-i |
| he/she/it | بوده استbude ast |
| we | بودهایمbude-im |
| you plural/polite | بودهایدbude-id |
| they | بودهاندbude-and |
تا امروز سه بار برای کار در شیراز بودهام.
tâ emruz se bâr barâ-ye kâr dar shirâz bude-am.
Up to today, I have been in Shiraz three times for work. (neutral standard; experience perfect)
بودن also supplies auxiliary layers for every verb: رسیده بودم “I had arrived” and رسیده باشم “that I may have arrived.” The lexical participle carries the event; بودـ/باشـ carries past viewpoint or subjunctive status.
پیش از بستهشدن درها به ایستگاه رسیده بودیم.
pish az baste-shodan-e dar-hâ be istgâh reside budim.
We had reached the station before the doors closed. (past perfect; بودیم is an auxiliary)
شاید نشانی را اشتباه نوشته باشی.
shâyad neshâni râ eshtebâh neveshte bâshi.
You may have written the address incorrectly. (perfect subjunctive; باشی is an auxiliary)
The explicit future خواهم بود، خواهی بود، خواهد بود، خواهیم بود، خواهید بود، خواهند بود is grammatical and frequent in formal forecasts or promises. Conversation usually uses present forms plus a future time expression.
طبق برنامه، سالن تا ساعت شش باز خواهد بود.
tebq-e bar-nâme, sâlon tâ sâ'at-e shesh bâz khâhad bud.
According to the schedule, the hall will be open until six. (formal written future)
Tehran speech
In everyday Tehran speech (informal, regional: Tehran), third-singular است becomes ـه, plural/polite ـید often becomes ـین, and third-plural ـند becomes ـن. The past stem stays بودـ, but endings reduce: بودین، بودن. These are systematic spoken forms, not spellings to mix randomly into formal prose.
من خونهام، ولی بچهها هنوز بیرونن.
man khune-am, vali bachche-hâ hanuz birun-an.
I'm home, but the kids are still out. (informal, regional: Tehran; ـه/ـن copular endings)
— دیشب کجا بودین؟ — خونهی دوستمون بودیم.
— dishab kojâ budin? — khune-ye dustemun budim.
— Where were you last night? — We were at our friend's place. (informal, regional: Tehran; polite/plural بودین)
Formal میباشد appears in bureaucratic and commercial writing, as in مبلغ قابل پرداخت میباشد. It is grammatical (formal/bureaucratic) but often heavier than است. It should not be taught as the everyday present of بودن.
Common Mistakes
1. Building the present with می plus هست
❌ من امروز در خانه میهستم.
Incorrect — ordinary present existence uses هستم, without می.
✅ من امروز تا ساعت پنج در خانه هستم.
man emruz tâ sâ'at-e panj dar khâne hastam.
I am at home until five today.
2. Negating است as a regular prefixed verb
❌ این صندلی نمیاست راحت.
Incorrect — the present negative copula is نیست and normally follows its predicate.
✅ این صندلی برای کار طولانی راحت نیست.
in sandali barâ-ye kâr-e tulâni râhat nist.
This chair is not comfortable for long periods of work.
3. Using بودـ as the subjunctive stem
❌ ممکن است فردا اداره بودم.
Incorrect — past بودم cannot express a first-person future possibility; use باشم.
✅ ممکن است فردا برای جلسه در اداره باشم.
momken ast fardâ barâ-ye jalase dar edâre bâsham.
I may be at the office for a meeting tomorrow.
4. Adding a third-singular ending to the past stem
❌ جلسه دیروز طولانی بودد.
Incorrect — third-singular simple past is the bare past stem بود.
✅ جلسهی برنامهریزی دیروز خیلی طولانی بود.
jalase-ye bar-nâme-rizi-ye diruz kheyli tulâni bud.
Yesterday's planning meeting was very long.
5. Mixing colloquial endings into formal writing
❌ پاسخها در پیوست هستن.
Incorrect for the intended document — write the full third-plural ending ـند: هستند.
✅ پاسخهای کامل در پیوست گزارش هستند.
pâsokh-hâ-ye kâmel dar peyvast-e gozâresh hastand.
The complete answers are in the report's appendix. (formal written standard)
Key Takeaways
- Learn five current sets: copular endings/است, full هستـ, negative نیستـ, past بودـ, and subjunctive/imperative باشـ.
- Use بود, not بودد, for third-singular past; use باشم, not بباشم, for subjunctive.
- بودن is both a lexical/copular verb and the auxiliary behind past-perfect and perfect-subjunctive forms.
- Tehran speech reduces several endings systematically; keep those reductions out of formal writing.
- Formal میباشد is register-specific, not the neutral everyday present of “to be.”
