خودداری کردن khoddâri kardan: to Refrain

خودداری کردن means “refrain, abstain, deliberately avoid doing something.” Its complement normally begins with از: از پاسخ دادن خودداری کرد “she refrained from answering.” The subject of خودداری کردن is also understood as the performer of the avoided action.

This lexical choice of از belongs to the broader system described under verb–preposition valency.

The predicate is formal-neutral in reports and especially common in regulations, safety instructions, news, and careful argument (formal/administrative). In ordinary conversation, a direct negative verb is often simpler: دست نزن “don’t touch” instead of از دست زدن خودداری کن. The register difference is functional, not a difference in truth conditions.

Principal parts

FormPersianRomanizationUse
infinitiveخودداری کردنkhoddâri kardanto refrain
past baseخودداری کردkhoddâri kardخودداری کردم
present baseخودداری کنkhoddâri konخودداری می‌کنم
past participleخودداری کردهkhoddâri kardeخودداری کرده‌اند
imperativeخودداری کن / خودداری کنیدkhoddâri kon / khoddâri konidrefrain
negative imperativeخودداری نکن / خودداری نکنیدkhoddâri nakon / khoddâri nakoniddo not refrain

Only کردن inflects. Neutral subjunctive and imperative forms normally omit affirmative بـ: خودداری کنم، خودداری کن. Negation attaches to the light verb: خودداری نمی‌کنم، خودداری نکردم، خودداری نکنم. Because the lexical meaning is already negative, these grammatical negatives require careful interpretation.

تا روشن شدن همه‌ی جزئیات، از اظهار نظر خودداری می‌کنم.

tâ rowshan shodan-e hame-ye joz'iyyât, az ezhâr-e nazar khoddâri mi-konam.

Until all the details become clear, I will refrain from commenting. (formal-neutral)

راننده از پاسخ دادن به پرسش خبرنگار خودداری کرد.

rânande az pâsokh dâdan be porsesh-e khabarnegâr khoddâri kard.

The driver declined to answer the reporter’s question. (formal/news register)

از هرگونه تماس مستقیم با این ماده خودداری کنید.

az hargune tamâs-e mostaqim bâ in mâdde khoddâri konid.

Avoid any direct contact with this substance. (formal safety instruction)

The complement begins with از

The avoided behavior can be a noun (از مصرف الکل), an action noun (از ورود), or a long infinitive (از باز کردن در). All are noun-like complements of از. A definite noun inside the action may still take را, but the avoided activity itself is not a direct object of خودداری کردن.

بیمار باید تا صبح از خوردن غذای جامد خودداری کند.

bimâr bâyad tâ sobh az khordan-e ghazâ-ye jâmed khoddâri konad.

The patient must refrain from eating solid food until morning. (formal medical instruction)

اعضا از انتشار متن نهایی پیش از جلسه خودداری کردند.

a'zâ az enteshâr-e matn-e nehâyi pish az jalse khoddâri kardand.

The members refrained from publishing the final text before the meeting. (formal-neutral)

خواهش می‌کنیم از باز کردن پنجره‌ها هنگام حرکت قطار خودداری کنید.

khâhesh mi-konim az bâz kardan-e panjare-hâ hengâm-e harekat-e qatâr khoddâri konid.

Please refrain from opening the windows while the train is moving. (formal public announcement)

The formula خواهش می‌شود از ... خودداری کنید is widespread in signs (formal/administrative). It layers an impersonal request over a polite plural imperative. Clear professional writing may simply use از ... خودداری کنید.

💡
Learn the complete frame از انجام کاری خودداری کردن. English “refrain from” happens to use a preposition too, but Persian specifically selects از, and that choice remains fixed with nouns and infinitives.

Control: who avoids the action?

The subject of خودداری کردن controls the subject of the dependent action. In مریم از پاسخ دادن خودداری کرد, Maryam is the person who does not answer. A different performer cannot be inserted as an ordinary subject inside the long infinitive.

پژوهشگران از تغییر داده‌های خام خودداری کردند.

pazhuheshgarân az taghyir-e dâde-hâ-ye khâm khoddâri kardand.

The researchers refrained from altering the raw data. (academic; researchers control the avoided action)

If another person is to avoid the action, make that person the subject of خودداری کردن or use a causative directive: از مهمان‌ها خواستیم از عکاسی خودداری کنند “we asked the guests not to take photographs.”

از بازدیدکنندگان خواستند از لمس آثار خودداری کنند.

az bâzdid-konandegân khâstand az lams-e âsâr khoddâri konand.

Visitors were asked to refrain from touching the exhibits. (formal institutional)

The finite کنند now agrees with بازدیدکنندگان. This clause is not a second subject placed inside an infinitive; it is the complement of خواستند.

Lexical negativity and grammatical negation

Affirmative خودداری کرد already entails a deliberate non-action: “refrained.” Grammatical negative خودداری نکرد reverses that stance: “did not refrain.” In a suitable context it strongly suggests that the action occurred, but logically it only denies restraint; completion of the embedded action may still require context.

FormLiteral scopeLikely discourse inference
از اعتراض خودداری کردrefrained from protestingdid not protest
از اعتراض خودداری نکردdid not refrain from protestingwent ahead and protested
نتوانست از اعتراض خودداری کندcould not refrainprotested despite attempted restraint

او این بار از بیان مخالفتش خودداری نکرد.

u in bâr az bayân-e mokhâlefat-ash khoddâri na-kard.

This time she did not refrain from voicing her disagreement. (formal-neutral; grammatical negation reverses lexical restraint)

با شنیدن آن پاسخ نتوانستم از خندیدن خودداری کنم.

bâ shenidan-e ân pâsokh na-tavânestam az khandidan khoddâri konam.

On hearing that answer, I could not keep myself from laughing. (neutral careful speech)

💡
Count two layers of negation separately. خودداری means restraint; نکرد negates that restraint. Therefore خودداری نکرد normally points toward action, not toward greater avoidance.

Voluntary restraint and nearby alternatives

خودداری کردن normally implies control or a deliberate decision. An accidental failure to act uses a different verb: نتوانست پاسخ دهد “could not answer,” فراموش کرد پاسخ دهد “forgot to answer.” Formal پرهیز کردن از overlaps with “avoid,” especially for risks, habits, and moral or medical advice. اجتناب کردن از is more formal and often bureaucratic.

برای جلوگیری از آسیب، از بلند کردن بار سنگین پرهیز کنید.

barâ-ye jelowgiri az âsib, az boland kardan-e bâr-e sangin parhiz konid.

To prevent injury, avoid lifting heavy loads. (formal medical/safety register; پرهیز کردن)

In ordinary speech, a direct negative command is usually more natural. به سیم دست نزن is concise; از تماس با سیم خودداری کن sounds like a posted instruction. Neither is inherently more polite—the latter is simply more institutional.

به این سیم دست نزن؛ روکش آن آسیب دیده است.

be in sim dast na-zan; rukesh-e ân âsib dide ast.

Do not touch this wire; its insulation is damaged. (neutral spoken standard; direct alternative)

Nominal خودداری

خودداری از + noun/action can itself be a noun phrase: خودداری از مصرف دخانیات ضروری است. It has no tense or subject agreement until another predicate is added. Formal prose uses this nominal pattern heavily because it can package a prohibition as an abstract policy statement.

خودداری از مصرف آب آلوده برای حفظ سلامت ضروری است.

khoddâri az masraf-e âb-e âlude barâ-ye hefz-e salâmat zaruri ast.

Refraining from consuming contaminated water is essential for protecting health. (formal; nominal construction)

Orthographically, derived noun خودداری is one word, while light verb کردن remains separate: خودداری کردن, not خود داری کردن and not خودداری‌کردن.

Tehran speech and register choice

The regular colloquial forms خودداری می‌کنه، خودداری می‌کنن are possible (informal, regional: Tehran), especially when paraphrasing a rule or report. In spontaneous conversation, speakers usually replace the entire predicate with a direct negative or نخواستن “not want/refuse.”

گفتن از جواب دادن خودداری کرده، یعنی نخواسته چیزی بگه.

goftan az javâb dâdan khoddâri karde, ya'ni na-khâste chizi be-ge.

They said he refused to answer—in other words, he didn’t want to say anything. (informal, regional: Tehran; paraphrasing formal wording)

Common Mistakes

1. Omitting از

❌ راننده پاسخ دادن خودداری کرد.

Incorrect — the avoided action is introduced by از.

✅ راننده از پاسخ دادن به سؤال دوم خودداری کرد.

rânande az pâsokh dâdan be so'âl-e dovvom khoddâri kard.

The driver declined to answer the second question.

2. Adding را to the از complement

❌ از انتشار خبر را خودداری کردند.

Incorrect — the preposition از already marks the avoided activity.

✅ تا پایان جلسه از انتشار خبر خودداری کردند.

tâ pâyân-e jalse az enteshâr-e khabar khoddâri kardand.

They refrained from releasing the news until the meeting ended.

3. Giving the infinitive another subject

❌ مدیر از کارکنان انتشار گزارش خودداری کرد.

Incorrect for ‘the employees refrained’ — the subject of خودداری controls the avoided action.

✅ کارکنان از انتشار گزارش ناقص خودداری کردند.

kârkonân az enteshâr-e gozâresh-e nâqes khoddâri kardand.

The employees refrained from publishing the incomplete report.

4. Splitting or joining the wrong boundary

❌ از ورود خود داری‌کردند.

Incorrect standard spelling — خودداری is one derived word, while کردن remains separate.

✅ مهمانان از ورود به بخش بسته خودداری کردند.

mehmânân az vorud be bakhsh-e baste khoddâri kardand.

The guests refrained from entering the closed section.

Key Takeaways

  • Inflect only کردن and introduce the avoided action with از.
  • The subject of خودداری کردن normally controls the subject of the avoided infinitive.
  • Affirmative خودداری کرد means non-action; negative خودداری نکرد negates restraint and usually implies action.
  • The predicate is common in formal instructions and reports; direct negative verbs are more natural in everyday conversation.
  • Write خودداری کردن with خودداری closed and the light verb separated.
