Questions & Answers about O hile yapmıyor, çünkü kuralı biliyor.
Why is "kural" written as "kuralı" here?
The suffix -ı is the definite accusative case marker. We use it because kural (rule) is the specific direct object of the verb biliyor (knows). He doesn't just know any rule, he knows the rule.
Why is the English translation "knows" instead of "is knowing", since "biliyor" uses the continuous -iyor tense?
In English, "to know" is a state verb and usually isn't used in the "-ing" form. But in Turkish, the present continuous tense (-iyor) is completely natural for ongoing states of mind like knowing (bilmek), wanting (istemek), or loving (sevmek).
How is the negative formed in "yapmıyor"?
The verb root is yap- (do/make). The negative suffix is normally -ma, but when you add the -yor suffix, the a narrows to an ı. So yap-ma-yor becomes yapmıyor.
Is "hile yapmak" always used together to mean "to cheat"?
Yes, hile means a trick, fraud, or deceit. To say "to cheat" in a game or on a test, Turkish combines it with yapmak (to make/do) to create the compound verb hile yapmak (literally "to make a trick").
