Questions & Answers about Patron bugün bana kızmadı.
How is the word kızmadı formed?
It comes from the verb kızmak (to get angry). First we take the root kız. Then we add the negative suffix -ma to make it negative, and finally the past tense suffix -dı for the "he/she/it" form. Together, kız-ma-dı means "he/she/it didn't get angry".
Why do we use bana (to me) instead of a direct translation for "at me"?
In English, you get angry "at" someone, but in Turkish, the verb kızmak (to get angry) always takes the dative case, which means "to" or "towards". You are literally saying the boss didn't get angry "to" me.
Why is the word for "to me" bana instead of "bene"?
The word ben (I) is a special exception to vowel harmony rules. When you add the dative suffix to mean "to me", ben changes to bana. The same thing happens with sen (you), which becomes sana (to you).
I've seen the word kız before. Doesn't it mean "girl"?
Yes, as a noun, kız means "girl" or "daughter". But here it is the root of the verb kızmak (to get angry). Turkish has a few words like this where the noun and the verb root look identical, but you can easily tell them apart from the sentence structure.
