When you want to describe an immediate consequence, a rapid reaction, or a quick transition, Turkish has a clever shortcut. By taking a verb in the simple past tense and following it with the question particle **mı / mi / mu / mü**, you create a clause meaning "as soon as [action happens]."

Even though this structure looks exactly like a yes/no question (e.g., *girdi mi?* = "did he enter?"), when followed by a main clause, it acts as a time trigger. Because it often describes habits, rules, or reflexes, the main verb is usually in the aorist (simple present) tense.

### Vowel Harmony and Consonants

The past tense suffix (**-DI**) and question particle (**mI**) both follow 4-way vowel harmony. Additionally, if the verb stem ends in a voiceless consonant (like **p**, **ç**, **t**, or **k**), the past tense suffix hardens to start with a **t** (**-tı / -ti / -tu / -tü**).
