The "As Soon As" Converb: -DI mı
When you want to describe an immediate consequence, a rapid reaction, or a quick transition, Turkish has a clever shortcut. By taking a verb in the simple past tense and following it with the question particle mı / mi / mu / mü, you create a clause meaning "as soon as [action happens]."
Even though this structure looks exactly like a yes/no question (e.g., girdi mi? = "did he enter?"), when followed by a main clause, it acts as a time trigger. Because it often describes habits, rules, or reflexes, the main verb is usually in the aorist (simple present) tense.
| As soon as he enters the court, we immediately start the offense. | Sahaya girdi mi hemen hücuma başlarız. |
| As soon as I take a shot, they leap. | Ben şut çektim mi sıçrarlar. |
Vowel Harmony and Consonants
The past tense suffix (-DI) and question particle (mI) both follow 4-way vowel harmony. Additionally, if the verb stem ends in a voiceless consonant (like p, ç, t, or k), the past tense suffix hardens to start with a t (-tı / -ti / -tu / -tü).
| As soon as the ball touches the net, the fans shout. | Top fileye dokundu mu taraftar bağırır. |
| As soon as they attack, we immediately transition to defense. | Onlar hücum yaptı mı biz hemen savunmaya geçeriz. |
| As soon as the referee whistles, the players stop. | Hakem ıslık çaldı mı oyuncular durur. |
