Questions & Answers about Çalım atmaktansa pas verir.
How is the word "atmaktansa" formed to mean "instead of"?
It is made by combining the infinitive atmak (to throw/do), the ablative case -tan (from), and the conditional suffix -sa (if). Literally, it translates to something like "if it is from doing [X]", which Turkish uses to express "rather than doing [X]" or "instead of doing [X]".
Could I use "yerine" instead of "-maktansa" here?
Yes, you could say çalım atmak yerine (instead of feinting). Using -maktansa often carries a slightly stronger sense of comparing two choices and expressing a clear preference for the latter over the former.
What exactly does "çalım atmak" mean outside of this sentence?
In sports, especially football/soccer, çalım atmak means to dribble past an opponent or feint. In everyday life, it is used metaphorically to mean "swaggering," "showing off," or cleverly deceiving someone.
Why is the aorist tense (verir) used here rather than the present continuous (veriyor)?
The aorist (-ir) is used to express general facts, habits, or characteristics. Here, it describes the general playstyle or habit of the player (he generally passes rather than dribbling), rather than an action happening right at this moment.
