Questions & Answers about Vi kan ju faktiskt inte smaksätta den klibbiga karamellen.
Why are there three adverbs in a row here (ju faktiskt inte), and does the order matter?
Yes, the order is quite strict! When stacking sentence adverbs in the midfield between the finite verb kan and the non-finite verb smaksätta, Swedish follows a specific hierarchy. Short discourse particles like ju or väl come first. Next come evaluating adverbs like faktiskt or tyvärr. The negation inte almost always comes last in this cluster.
How does ju work as a translation for of course in this sentence?
ju is a modal particle that does not have a direct English equivalent. It signals that the speaker expects the listener to already know or agree with the statement. While translated here as of course to capture the feeling of shared knowledge, it is much softer and more conversational than using a direct word like självklart or förstås.
Why does the adjective klibbiga end in an -a here?
Because the noun phrase is definite. In Swedish, when you use a standalone definite article like den, the adjective that follows must take its definite form, which almost always ends in -a. This completes the classic double definite structure seen in den klibbiga karamellen.
Is karamellen exactly the same as caramel in English?
