Stacking Sentence Adverbs
In Swedish, sentence adverbs (like inte, alltid, or faktiskt) live in the "midfield" of the sentence—typically right after the finite verb in a main clause. Swedish allows you to stack several of them back-to-back in this slot to add nuance.
| There are actually always small sticky toffees in the candy shop, as you know. | Det finns ju faktiskt alltid små klibbiga kolor i godisbutiken. |
The Adverb Order
When stringing these adverbs together, they naturally organize themselves from the speaker's overarching attitude down to the hard facts:
- Attitude/Modal: Small conversational words showing expectation (ju, väl).
- Certainty/Emphasis: Words evaluating truth or degree (faktiskt, verkligen, absolut, antagligen, förmodligen).
- Time/Frequency: Words denoting when or how often (alltid, redan).
- Negation: Words that negate the sentence (inte, aldrig).
Let's see this sequence in action:
| You are really not going to eat the sticky mixture, are you? | Du ska väl verkligen inte äta den klibbiga smeten? |
Notice the strict order: väl (attitude) followed by verkligen (emphasis) followed by inte (negation).
| We actually always flavor the candy cane with peppermint, as you know. | Vi brukar ju faktiskt alltid smaksätta polkagrisen med pepparmynta. |
Anchoring with Negation
Because of this hierarchy, negative adverbs like inte (not) and aldrig (never) almost always anchor the very end of the adverb cluster. Meanwhile, lighter conversational words like ju (as you know) float to the front of the stack.
| I actually never gave you the chewy candy, you know. | Jag gav dig ju faktiskt aldrig den sega karamellen. |
| The licorice is probably not as chewy as the toffee in the candy shop, of course. | Lakritsen är ju antagligen inte lika seg som kolan i godisbutiken. |
Stacking in Questions
The exact same sequence applies in questions. Because questions invert the subject and verb, the entire adverb cluster simply shifts to sit right after the subject.
| You have actually already flavored the mixture with peppermint, haven't you? | Du har väl faktiskt redan smaksatt smeten med pepparmynta? |
