Questions & Answers about Är du beredd på att det nya yrket innebär en stor förändring?
Why is there a på right before att?
This is a key feature of Swedish! In English, we usually cannot put a preposition directly before the word "that", so we add extra words like "the fact" (prepared for the fact that). In Swedish, if an expression takes a specific preposition (like vara beredd på, meaning "to be prepared for"), you simply keep that preposition directly in front of the att-clause.
Could I drop the på and just say Är du beredd att...?
No, because that changes the grammar and the meaning. Beredd att is usually followed by a verb in the infinitive and means you are "willing to" or "ready to" do an action (e.g., beredd att arbeta). Beredd på att is followed by a full clause and means you are mentally "prepared for" a situation or event to happen.
Why use innebär here instead of betyder?
While both can translate to "means" in English, they have different uses. Betyder is mostly used for literal definitions, like what a word, sign, or symbol means. Innebär means "entails" or "involves" as a consequence. Since the new profession has a big change as a consequence, innebär is the natural choice.
As a refresher, why does "the new profession" become det nya yrket with so many definite endings?
This is the Swedish "double definite" rule. Whenever you use a definite noun with an adjective, you need three parts working together: the freestanding definite article (det), the adjective with its -a ending (nya), and the definite suffix attached to the noun itself (yrket).
