Why do we use den långa meningen instead of just långa meningen?
This is a strict rule in Swedish called double definiteness. When you add an adjective to a definite noun like meningen (the sentence), you must also add the separate front article den and use the definite form of the adjective långa.
Why is ännu used for 'even' here instead of även?
When intensifying a comparative word like snabbare (faster), you must use ännu. You only use även when 'even' means 'also' or 'including', such as 'even my brother went'.
How is the word snabbare formed?
To make comparisons, regular Swedish adjectives add the ending -are. Taking the base adjective snabb (fast) and adding -are gives you snabbare (faster).
Why isn't the verb översätta in the present tense?
It comes directly after the modal verb kan (can). In Swedish, just like in English, a modal verb is always followed by the infinitive (dictionary form) of the next verb, which is why we use översätta instead of the present tense översätter.
