Questions & Answers about Forskaren använder inte teleskopet förrän det är mörkt ute.
Why do we use förrän for "until" here instead of tills?
In Swedish, you must use förrän when the main clause is negative (when it contains inte or another negative word). Since the researcher does not use the telescope, we use förrän. If the sentence were positive, like "The researcher waits until it is dark", you would use tills.
Why does inte come after the verb använder?
In a standard Swedish main clause, the verb comes in the second position (the V2 rule). The negative word inte usually comes directly after that verb when the sentence starts with the subject.
Why does the adjective mörkt end with a "t"?
When talking about general conditions like weather or time, Swedish uses det as a dummy subject (just like "it" in English). Because det is an ett-word, the adjective must take the matching ett-form, so we add a "t" to mörk.
Why is the word for "outside" ute instead of ut?
Swedish has two different words for "outside" depending on motion. Ute describes a fixed location or state (being outside), while ut implies motion (going outside). Since the darkness is a state without movement, we use ute.
