Not until (inte ... förrän)

Inte ... förrän (Not ... until)

In English, "until" works in both positive and negative sentences. In Swedish, if the main clause is negative—using words like inte (not) or ingen (no one)—you must use förrän for "until".

The astronaut has not rested until now.
Astronauten har inte vilat förrän nu.
The crew does not go to space until tomorrow.
Besättningen åker inte till rymden förrän imorgon.

You can use förrän directly before a time expression:

We will not launch the rocket until a year from now.
Vi ska inte skjuta upp raketen förrän om ett år.

Or use it as a conjunction to introduce a new clause with its own subject and verb:

They do not launch the rocket until the astronaut is ready.
De skjuter inte upp raketen förrän astronauten är klar.
They cannot explore the planet until the landing is finished.
De kan inte utforska planeten förrän landningen är klar.

Other negative words

The rule applies with any negative word in the main clause, not just inte.

No one is allowed to get up until after the landing.
Ingen får stiga upp förrän efter landningen.
