Vad vill du göra nu?

Questions & Answers about Vad vill du göra nu?

Why is there no word for "to" between vill and göra?
Vill (want to) is a modal verb. In Swedish, modal verbs are followed directly by the base form (infinitive) of the next verb, without the word att (to). This is just like how we say "I can go" in English instead of "I can to go".
Wait, doesn't vill mean "will"?
It looks like it, but it is a "false friend"! Vill always means "want" or "want to". If you want to say "will" to talk about the future in Swedish, you would usually use a completely different word, like ska.
How do I know to use göra instead of the present tense gör?
The first verb in the sentence, vill, is already in the present tense. When you use a modal verb, the second verb that follows it must be in its dictionary form (the infinitive). For most Swedish verbs, this infinitive form ends in -a, which is why it is göra here and not gör.
Why is the subject du placed after the verb vill?
This is because Swedish strictly follows the "V2 rule", which means the main verb almost always takes the second position in a sentence. Since the question word Vad takes spot number one, the verb vill must take spot number two, pushing the subject du into spot number three.
