Why use podría instead of puede or puedes for this request?
Using the conditional tense (podría) softens the request, a technique known as pragmatic attenuation. It makes your request sound much more polite and less demanding, exactly like choosing "Could you..." instead of "Can you..." in English.
Since podría can mean "I could", "he/she could", or "you could", how do we know who is supposed to make the call?
In a real conversation, context makes it clear. Because this is a direct question posed to another person, it is understood as a request using the formal usted (you). It's best to stick with the conditional podría. While querer commonly uses the imperfect subjunctive (quisiera) for polite requests, the verbs poder and deber almost exclusively rely on the conditional (podría, debería) to show politeness. Using pudiera to mean "could you" in a request sounds unnatural in most of Latin America.
