Softening requests with quisiera
When dealing with formal matters like renting an apartment, saying "I want" (quiero) can sound too direct. To sound polite and professional, use quisiera (the imperfect subjunctive of querer). It translates to "I would like" and instantly softens your request.
| Hello, I would like to be your new tenant. | Hola, quisiera ser su nuevo inquilino. |
| I would like to understand the matter of the monthly rent. | Quisiera entender lo de la mensualidad. |
Asking for favors with podría
Using podría (from poder, meaning "could") in the conditional tense is perfect for politely asking if someone can do something for you, or to gently ask for permission.
| Could you call the real estate agency tomorrow? | ¿Podría llamar a la inmobiliaria mañana? |
| Could I inspect the bathrooms to see what they include? | ¿Podría inspeccionar los baños para ver qué incluyen? |
Combine both quisiera and podría to be extra courteous when gathering information:
| I would like to know if I could speak with the owner. | Quisiera saber si podría hablar con el propietario. |
Making suggestions with deber
Use the conditional form of deber—like debería (should) or deberíamos (we should)—to ask for advice or make gentle suggestions without sounding bossy.
| Should I ask the owner for the deposit today? | ¿Debería pedirle el depósito al propietario hoy? |
| We should inspect the apartment so that we notice every flaw. | Deberíamos inspeccionar el departamento de manera que notemos cada desperfecto. |
