Questions & Answers about Ojalá hubiéramos puesto más dedicación en la maestría.
Why do we use the past perfect subjunctive (hubiéramos puesto) after Ojalá here?
Ojalá always triggers the subjunctive. When combined with the past perfect subjunctive, it expresses a regret or a wish about an event that already happened (or failed to happen) in the past. It is the exact equivalent of saying 'I wish we had [done something]' in English.
Why does hubiéramos have a written accent mark?
The nosotros form of the imperfect subjunctive always carries an accent on the vowel immediately preceding the -ramos ending. This is because the spoken stress falls on the third-to-last syllable, and Spanish spelling rules require that all words stressed on that syllable must have a written accent.
Is puesto a regular past participle?
No, it is highly irregular. It comes from the verb poner (to put). Instead of taking a regular ending, it becomes puesto. This is one of the most common irregular past participles you need to memorize to form perfect tenses like the past perfect subjunctive.
Why does the sentence use en to translate into?
When talking about putting time, effort, or dedication into something abstract like a project or a degree, Spanish naturally uses the preposition en. You do not need a directional word to translate the English concept of putting effort 'into' something.
Does maestría always mean a master's degree?
