The past perfect subjunctive (hubiera)

The past perfect subjunctive

The past perfect subjunctive (el pluscuamperfecto de subjuntivo) is used to talk about hypothetical situations in the past—things that didn't happen, missed opportunities, or deep regrets.

To form it, combine the imperfect subjunctive of the auxiliary verb haber with a past participle (ending in -ado or -ido).

PronounForm of haber
yo / él / ella / ustedhubiera
hubieras
nosotros / nosotrashubiéramos
ellos / ellas / ustedeshubieran

Deep regrets with "Ojalá"

Use Ojalá with the past perfect subjunctive to express a strong wish about the past that cannot be changed, meaning "I wish [something] had happened."

I wish I had taken advantage of all my potential.
Ojalá hubiera aprovechado todo mi potencial.
I wish we had not wasted our youth.
Ojalá no hubiéramos desperdiciado la juventud.

Reacting to the past

Just like the present subjunctive, you use this tense after expressions of emotion, doubt, or subjective judgment. If your reaction was in the past (like lamenté que or me sorprendió que) and the action happened before that reaction, use the past perfect subjunctive.

He had a great potential; I regretted that he had wasted it.
Él tenía un gran potencial; lamenté que lo hubiera desperdiciado.
I doubted that they had used the knowledge.
Dudé que ellos hubieran usado el conocimiento.
It surprised me that the employee had not shown dedication.
Me sorprendió que el empleado no hubiera mostrado dedicación.

Irregular past participles

The same irregular past participles you already know—like hecho (from hacer), puesto (from poner), and visto (from ver)—are used to form the past perfect subjunctive.

I wish you had not made that professional sacrifice.
Ojalá no hubieras hecho ese sacrificio profesional.
I wish we had put more dedication into the master's degree.
Ojalá hubiéramos puesto más dedicación en la maestría.
I wish you had seen my true capacity.
Ojalá hubieras visto mi verdadera capacidad.

Missed career opportunities

Use these forms to reflect on business ventures, ambitions (la ambición), and whether you stood out (sobresalir) or failed (fracasar).

I always feared that the project had failed.
Siempre temí que el proyecto hubiera fracasado.
I wish I had been able to stand out in that interview.
Ojalá hubiera podido sobresalir en esa entrevista.
It was sad that his great ambition had failed.
Fue triste que su gran ambición hubiera fracasado.
