Why does the sentence start with Como instead of Porque to say "Since" or "Because"?
In Spanish, when you want to start a sentence by giving the reason or cause, you use Como. You generally cannot start a sentence with Porque in this way. If you prefer to use porque, you have to flip the sentence order so the reason comes second: La prefiero porque esa alternativa está disponible.
Why is it esa alternativa and not esta alternativa?
Esa means "that" (often referring to something just mentioned or slightly removed from the speaker), while esta means "this". Both end in "-a" because they must match the feminine noun alternativa.
