Why is it pagué instead of "pagé"?
The verb is pagar (to pay). In the preterite (past) tense, the "yo" form needs to keep the hard "g" sound from the infinitive. In Spanish, a "g" followed directly by an "e" makes a soft, throaty sound (similar to an English "h"). Does cuenta always mean "bill"?

Why do we say tarjeta de crédito instead of "crédito tarjeta"?

Why isn't there a yo (I) at the beginning of the sentence?
The ending of pagué already tells us exactly who did the action because it is the specific "yo" form for the past tense. You could say Yo pagué if you really wanted to emphasize that you paid instead of someone else, but it is completely optional and usually left out.
