Learn Spanish (Latin America): ¿Tocas la guitarra nueva?

Spanish doesn't use helping words like 'do' or 'does' to make a question. Instead, you just use the normal verb tocas (you play) and frame it with question marks. When speaking, you simply raise the pitch of your voice at the end of the sentence to show it is a question.

I thought the verb for 'to play' was 'jugar'. Why is it 'tocas' here?

Spanish uses two different verbs for 'to play'. You use jugar for playing sports or games. However, you use tocar, which also means 'to touch', when talking about playing a musical instrument like la guitarra.

Can I add 'tú' and say '¿Tú tocas la guitarra nueva?'

Yes, you can! You can put tú before the verb (¿Tú tocas...?) or after it (¿Tocas tú...?). But because the ending of tocas already tells us that 'you' are doing the action, native speakers usually drop the tú completely.

Why is it 'guitarra nueva' instead of 'nueva guitarra'?

In English, describing words (adjectives) usually go before the thing they describe. In Spanish, it is exactly the opposite. The adjective nueva (new) comes directly after the noun it describes, guitarra (guitar).
