Yes/No questions

In Spanish, forming a yes/no question is simple. You don't need extra helping verbs like "do" or "does." Instead, you rely on punctuation, word order, and tone of voice.

Questions with Intonation

The easiest way to ask a yes/no question is to keep the exact same word order as a regular statement. In writing, just add an inverted question mark (¿) at the beginning and a standard one (?) at the end. When speaking, simply raise your pitch at the end of the sentence.

Do you listen to new music?
¿Tú escuchas música nueva?
Does she sing and play the guitar?
¿Ella canta y toca la guitarra?

Subject-Verb Inversion

Another common way to form questions is to swap the subject and the verb. Instead of saying the subject first, you start with the verb.

Do you listen to music?
¿Escucha usted música?
Do they dance in the park?
¿Bailan ellos en el parque?

Dropping the Subject

Because Spanish verb endings already tell us who is doing the action, you can often leave the subject pronoun out entirely. This is very common in everyday conversation and makes your questions sound natural.

Do you dance a lot at home?
¿Bailas mucho en la casa?
Do you play the new guitar?
¿Tocas la guitarra nueva?
