Why is it el mapa and not la mapa if the word ends in 'a'?
Most Spanish words ending in -a are feminine, but mapa is a famous exception! It is a masculine noun. Many words of Greek origin that end in -ma or -pa (like el problema or el mapa) are masculine in Spanish.
Since mapa ends in 'a', shouldn't the adjective be nueva?
Adjectives must match the gender of the noun they describe, not just the last letter. Because mapa is a masculine word (el mapa), the adjective describing it must also be masculine: nuevo.
Why doesn't interesante change to interesanto to match the masculine noun?
Adjectives that end in -e in their basic dictionary form do not change for gender. They look exactly the same for both masculine and feminine nouns. You use interesante for el mapa (masculine) and also for la clase (feminine). They only change to add an -s if the noun is plural.
Why does nuevo come after mapa instead of before it?
In Spanish, adjectives that describe a specific trait of a noun usually come directly after it. So instead of "the new map", you say "the map new" (el mapa nuevo).
