Adjectives that don't change for gender
In Spanish, many adjectives end in -e or a consonant (like -l or -n). These adjectives use the exact same form for both masculine and feminine nouns.
| The green book is interesting. | El libro verde es interesante. |
| The blue house is big. | La casa azul es grande. |
Making invariable adjectives plural
While these adjectives ignore gender, they still must agree in number (singular vs. plural).
- If the adjective ends in -e, add -s.
- If the adjective ends in a consonant, add -es.
- If the adjective ends in -z (like feliz), change the z to c and add -es.
| Ending | Singular | Plural |
|---|---|---|
| -e | verde | verdes |
| consonant | azul | azules |
| -z | feliz | felices |
Here are some examples of invariable adjectives matching plural nouns:
| You are intelligent students. | Ustedes son estudiantes inteligentes. |
| The blue cars are different. | Los carros azules son diferentes. |
Pay special attention to the spelling change when feliz becomes plural:
| The doctor is young and happy. | El doctor es joven y feliz. |
| The friends are young and happy. | Las amigas son jóvenes y felices. |
