Learn Romanian: Noi înțelegem mesajul nou. - We understand the new message.

The dictionary form is a înțelege (to understand). It ends in -e, making it a regular Group 3 verb. To form the noi (we) present tense for this group, you drop the final -e and add -em, resulting in înțelegem.

Why is -ul attached to the end of mesaj?

In Romanian, the word for "the" (the definite article) attaches to the end of the noun. Since mesaj (message) is a singular noun ending in a consonant, it takes the ending -ul to become mesajul (the message).

Is mesaj a masculine, feminine, or neuter noun?

Mesaj is a neuter noun. A helpful rule for A1 learners: neuter nouns behave exactly like masculine nouns when singular. That is why it uses -ul for "the" and why the adjective takes the masculine singular form nou.

Why does the word nou (new) come after the noun?

Unlike in English, most descriptive adjectives in Romanian are placed directly after the noun. So instead of "the new message", you say "the message new" (mesajul nou).

Can I leave out the word noi and just say Înțelegem mesajul nou?
