The Conditional Tense
To talk about dreams, hypothetical situations, and what you would do in an ideal scenario, Romanian uses the conditional tense.
The present conditional is easy to form. You combine a special auxiliary verb with the infinitive form of the main verb (dropping the a from the infinitive).
Here is the full set of auxiliary verbs for the conditional:
| Pronoun | Auxiliary |
|---|
| eu | aș |
| tu | ai |
| el / ea | ar |
| noi | am |
| voi | ați |
| ei / ele | ar |
Talking About Yourself and Others
Use aș for "I would" and ai for "you would". Simply place the auxiliary right before the infinitive of your action verb.
For the third person (he, she, it, and they), the auxiliary is always ar.
We and You (Plural)
For "we would" use am, and for "you all would" use ați.
Hypothetical "If" Scenarios
When creating a hypothetical sentence with "if" (dacă), Romanian uses the conditional tense in both halves of the sentence.
This is different from English, which usually puts the simple past in the "if" clause (e.g., "if you had my luck"). In Romanian, you literally say "if you would have my luck".
