Why is vila translated as small town instead of villa?
In Portuguese, vila is a false friend. It does not mean a large vacation house (which is usually called a vivenda or moradia). A vila is a small town, larger than an aldeia (village) but smaller than a cidade (city).
Why does bonita come after praça?
In Portuguese, adjectives usually come directly after the noun they describe. Since praça (square) is a feminine word, the adjective takes the feminine form bonita instead of the masculine bonito, giving us praça bonita.
Is there a rule for when to use the letter ç like in the word praça?
The cedilla (ç) is used to give the letter c a soft s-like sound before the vowels a, o, or u. You will never see it before e or i because a regular c already makes that sound before those vowels.
Could I use the verb haver here instead of tem?
If you wanted to say there is a pretty square in the small town, you would use há (from haver), like this: Na vila há uma praça bonita. But because this sentence specifically says the small town has a square, we use tem (from ter).
