Questions & Answers about Precisamos do gráfico para que a sondagem seja relevante.
Why is seja used here instead of é?
The phrase para que (meaning "so that" or "in order that") expresses a goal or purpose. In Portuguese, para que is a strict trigger that always forces the following verb into the subjunctive mood. Because of this, the present indicative é becomes the present subjunctive seja.
Could I say para a sondagem ser relevante instead?
Yes, absolutely! Using para plus the personal infinitive (ser) is extremely common in European Portuguese. It means exactly the same thing and is a great way to express purpose without having to recall the subjunctive conjugation.
Why does the sentence use do gráfico instead of just o gráfico?
The verb precisar requires the preposition de when it is followed by a noun or pronoun (literally translating to "to have need of"). Because gráfico is a masculine noun, de combines with the definite article o to form the contraction do.
