Questions & Answers about Há meses que o senhor não conseguia usar os binóculos.
Why is the imperfect tense used here instead of a past perfect tense?
In Portuguese, when an action was ongoing in the past over a period of time, we use the Imperfect tense (conseguia) paired with the structure Há [amount of time] que. Literally, this sentence reads as 'There are months that the gentleman wasn't managing to use...'. It is a very natural way to express that an action had been happening for a while.
Could I use desde instead of há to say 'for months'?
No, you need to use há meses. You use há when talking about a duration or amount of time passed (like 'for months' or 'for two years'). You use desde when pointing to a specific starting point in the past, just like 'since' in English (for example, desde o ano passado meaning 'since last year').
Why use conseguia instead of podia? Both can translate to 'was able to'.
Conseguir focuses on the physical or mental ability to achieve something, often implying some effort or overcoming an obstacle. In this context, the gentleman likely had a physical limitation (like failing eyesight) that stopped him from using the binoculars. Poder is generally used to talk about having permission or a situational opportunity.
What is the purpose of que in Há meses que?
