Six Essential Irregular Verbs

Here are six common irregular verbs. Many have a highly irregular eu (I) form, but settle into a more predictable pattern for their other forms.

Fazer (to do / to make):

eufaço
tufazes
ele / ela / vocêfaz
nósfazemos
eles / elas / vocêsfazem
I do the work with a lot of care.
Eu faço o trabalho com muito cuidado.
Do you always do that in the dark?
Tu fazes sempre isso no escuro?

Both dizer (to say / to tell) and trazer (to bring) end in -go in the eu form, with a z in their other forms.

Dizer:

eudigo
tudizes
ele / ela / vocêdiz
nósdizemos
eles / elas / vocêsdizem

You will often use the conjunction que (that) to link statements:

Trazer:

I bring the umbrella when it rains.
Eu trago o guarda-chuva quando chove.
She brings the computer in the bag.
Ela traz o computador na mala.

Saber (to know):

Its eu form is completely unique.

I know that the lie is the problem.

Rhyming Twins: Sair and Cair

Sair (to leave / to go out) and cair (to fall) follow the exact same pattern. They gain an extra i in the eu form and require an accent on the nós form (saímos, caímos).

Sair:

eusaio
tusais
ele / ela / vocêsai
nóssaímos
eles / elas / vocêssaem
I leave the apartment when it is dark.
Eu saio do apartamento quando está escuro.
We are leaving now, but we do not know the way.
Nós saímos agora, mas não sabemos o caminho.

Cair:

nóscaímos
eles / elas / vocêscaem
I fall because I am not careful.
Eu caio porque não tenho cuidado.
The glass falls on the floor.
O copo cai no chão.
The keys fall on the floor.
As chaves caem no chão.
