Questions & Answers about Eu trago o guarda-chuva quando chove.
Why is the verb "to bring" spelled trago here?
Trazer (to bring) is highly irregular in the "I" form of the present tense. Instead of following normal conjugation rules, it changes completely to trago. Fortunately, the other forms are a bit more regular (like ele traz and nós trazemos), so trago is a special exception you just have to memorize for this lesson!
What is the literal translation of guarda-chuva?
It literally means "rain-guard"! It combines the verb guardar (to keep or to guard) and chuva (rain). Because it is a compound noun starting with a verb, it takes the masculine gender (o guarda-chuva), even though chuva on its own is a feminine word.
Why isn't there a word for "it" before chove?
In Portuguese, you don't use a dummy subject like "it" for weather verbs. Chove comes from the verb chover (to rain) conjugated in the third-person singular form. You just say chove to mean "it rains".
