Questions & Answers about Zawsze czytam instrukcję, kiedy montuję ten nowy zestaw.
Why do the two 'I' verbs have different endings (czytam vs montuję)?
Polish verbs fall into different conjugation groups. Czytać (to read) belongs to the group that takes -am in the first person singular (czytam). However, montować (to assemble) ends in -ować. Verbs ending in -ować always drop that ending and take -uję for the 'I' form, becoming montuję.
Both instrukcję and ten nowy zestaw are direct objects. Why did instrukcja change its ending, but ten nowy zestaw didn't?
They are both in the Accusative case, but they follow different gender rules. Instrukcja is a feminine noun, and feminine nouns change their -a ending to -ę in the Accusative. Zestaw is a masculine inanimate noun, along with its modifiers ten and nowy. For masculine inanimate nouns, the Accusative form looks exactly the same as the basic dictionary form (Nominative).
In English, we usually read 'the instructions' (plural). Why is instrukcję singular here?
In Polish, instrukcja can mean a single instruction, but it is also the standard word for a 'manual' or 'instruction booklet'. When referring to the whole manual, Polish typically uses the singular form. If you used the plural (instrukcje), it would sound like you are reading a list of isolated commands rather than a single document.
