Questions & Answers about Dziś jest pierwszy marca. To ważna data w moim kalendarzu.
Why is it pierwszy marca and not pierwszego marca?
Because we are just stating what today is (Today is the first...), so we use the Nominative case for the day (pierwszy). If we wanted to say something happened on this date, we would use the Genitive case for both words (pierwszego marca). The month (marca) is always in the Genitive because it translates to 'of March'.
Why does the word for March change so much from marzec to marca?
The dictionary form is marzec. When we add the Genitive ending -a, the -e- drops out (a common 'fleeting e' in Polish). Additionally, the spelling simplifies from -rz- to -r-, making the final word marca.
Why does the second sentence use To ważna data instead of To jest ważną datą?
When you use the word to to mean 'this is' or 'it is', you follow it with the basic Nominative case (ważna data). If you used a subject pronoun and jest, you would need the Instrumental case (Ona jest ważną datą), but to followed by the Nominative is the most natural way to identify a thing.
In w moim kalendarzu, why does kalendarz take an -u ending?
