Questions & Answers about Miejże litość i opamiętaj się, jest już za późno!
What exactly does the -że in miejże do to the sentence?
The particle -ż or -że is added to imperative verbs to add strong emotion, urgency, or impatience. While miej litość just means "have mercy", miejże litość sounds more like "Have some mercy!" or "Do have mercy, will you!" It shows the speaker is highly exasperated.
Why is the particle spelled -że here instead of just -ż?
The emphatic particle has two forms to make pronunciation flow naturally: -ż is used after vowels (like in zróbmyż), and -że is used after consonants. Since the imperative miej ends in the consonant j, it takes the -że form to prevent an awkward consonant cluster.
If the speaker is so emphatic, why isn't it opamiętajże się later in the sentence?
When you have a series of commands connected by i (and), you typically only attach the emphatic -że to the very first verb. Adding it to every single verb in a row would sound incredibly theatrical and unnatural. The urgency established by the first particle carries over to the rest of the sentence.
litość is the direct object of miejże. Why doesn't its ending change to show the accusative case?
