Questions & Answers about Ta nowa publikacja, opisująca złożone problemy, jest bardzo popularna wśród badaczy.
How would you rewrite this sentence using a standard relative clause instead of the participle "opisująca"?
You would use która opisuje. The sentence would be: Ta nowa publikacja, która opisuje złożone problemy, jest bardzo popularna wśród badaczy. Using the active adjectival participle opisująca (describing) makes the sentence sound more formal and concise, which is very common in written Polish.
Why does "opisująca" end in "-ąca" in this sentence?
Active adjectival participles act like adjectives, meaning they must match the noun they modify in gender, number, and case. Here, it modifies publikacja, which is a feminine, singular noun in the nominative case. The base masculine form for the verb opisywać is opisujący, which changes to opisująca to match the feminine noun.
Does the participle "opisująca" change the grammatical case of "złożone problemy" compared to a normal verb?
No, it doesn't change it at all! Even though opisująca is acting as an adjective to describe the publication, it still keeps its verb-like properties. Because the verb opisywać takes a direct object in the accusative case, the participle form also requires the accusative case (złożone problemy).
What case is "badaczy" in the phrase "wśród badaczy"?
It is in the genitive case. The preposition wśród (among) always forces the following noun into the genitive case. Because badacz (researcher) is a masculine personal noun, its genitive plural form takes the -y ending, becoming badaczy.
