Questions & Answers about To był taki dzień, jaki wszyscy pamiętają.
Why is it To był instead of To było if to is a neuter pronoun?
When to is used to mean 'It was' or 'This was' right before a noun, the verb być (to be) actually agrees in gender with the noun that comes after it. Since dzień (day) is a masculine noun, the verb must be the masculine form był, regardless of the neuter word to.
Why use jaki here instead of który for the word 'that'?
The pronoun jaki pairs perfectly with taki to describe a type or quality of something. The set phrase taki ..., jaki ... translates nicely to 'the kind of ..., that ...'. If you used który, it would point to the specific day itself, but jaki emphasizes the characteristics of that day.
Why is the verb pamiętają in the present tense if the sentence starts in the past tense with To był?
The present tense is used here to state a general, timeless fact: it was the kind of day that people in general will always remember. If you used the past tense pamiętali, it would imply a specific group of people remembered it in the past.
Why does wszyscy take the plural verb pamiętają when the English translation 'everyone' takes a singular verb?
In Polish, wszyscy literally means 'all people' and is grammatically a plural masculine personal pronoun. Because it is plural, it always requires a plural verb form.
