Question 1

Is informatyka the only word for computer science, or do Polish speakers use an English loanword like IT?

Accepted Answer

Informatyka is the standard, everyday Polish word for both computer science (as a university degree) and IT (as a school subject or general field). You will hear people in the corporate world say IT (pronounced aj-ti), but informatyka is the most widely used and natural Polish term.

Question 2

Why is the adjective ważna in the nominative case here instead of the instrumental case?

Accepted Answer

With the verb być (to be), we use the nominative case when describing a noun with an adjective alone (Computer science is important). If we were equating the noun to another noun (e.g., Computer science is a science / Informatyka jest nauką), we would use the instrumental case. Since Informatyka is a feminine noun, the describing adjective takes the feminine nominative ending -a.

Question 3

Could I use the shorter word dziś instead of dzisiaj in this sentence?

Accepted Answer

Yes, absolutely! Dziś and dzisiaj both mean today and are completely interchangeable. Dziś is just slightly shorter and might feel a bit punchier, but both are perfectly natural in this context.

Question 4

Can I change the word order to put dzisiaj at the beginning of the sentence?

Accepted Answer

Yes, Polish word order is flexible. You could say Dzisiaj informatyka jest bardzo ważna to emphasize the time frame (today, as opposed to in the past). Putting dzisiaj in the middle, like in the original sentence, gives it a neutral flow where today is just background context for the main point that it is bardzo ważna (very important).
