School subjects and learning (matematyka, nauczyć się, na pamięć)

The subjects

informatyka — and historia, which you already know. All are feminine nouns in -a, so they decline like szkoła: lubię matematykę, nauczyciel fizyki, na geografii (in the geography class — na + Locative is how you say "in the lesson of").

Types of school

Przedszkole (nursery) → primary school

szkoła podstawowa (primary school, eight years) → liceum (secondary school, ending with matura) → uniwersytet or studia.

Teaching and learning: uczyć, uczyć się, nauczyć się

to teach (uczyć kogoś czegoś)

uczyć — to teach. The person taught is in the Accusative and the subject in the Genitive: uczyć dzieci polskiego (to teach children Polish).

Uczyć się (which you know) — to learn, to study, with the Genitive: uczę się polskiego.

to learn (perfective of uczyć się)

nauczyć się — its PERFECTIVE: to learn as a completed result. Uczyłem się rok (I studied for a year) versus nauczyłem się (I have learned it).

Memory

to memorize, to remember (perfective)

zapamiętać — to memorize, to remember (perfective) — the result of pamiętać.

by heart

na pamięć — by heart: uczyć się na pamięć, znać na pamięć.
