Questions & Answers about Napoli, emblema della storia e capoluogo del sud, è bella.
Why are there no articles before emblema and capoluogo?
In Italian, when you use a noun phrase directly after a proper noun to describe or define it (called an apposition), you must drop the definite article. So, while in English we say 'Naples, the emblem...', in Italian it is simply Napoli, emblema....
The translation says 'capital', but the Italian word is capoluogo. What is the difference between capoluogo and capitale?
Capitale is used for the national capital of a country, like Rome or Paris. Capoluogo refers to the chief city or administrative center of a region or province. Since Naples is the regional capital of Campania and the main city of the south, capoluogo is the exact term to use here.
Why is the adjective at the end feminine (bella)?
The adjective bella agrees with Napoli. In Italian, cities are almost always considered feminine by default, regardless of their ending. So, even though Napoli ends in -i, it still requires feminine adjectives.
If we drop the article before emblema, why do we keep it in della storia and del sud?
The rule to drop the article only applies to the main describing nouns that directly redefine the proper noun (the appositives), which are emblema and capoluogo. Any other nouns that follow them as extra details still follow normal article rules, which is why we must use the articulated prepositions della (di + la) and del (di + il).
