Questions & Answers about Essendo il direttore assente, abbiamo rimandato il progetto.
Why is il direttore placed after essendo?
In an absolute gerund construction, the explicit subject is placed directly after the gerund. While in English we say "The director being absent," translating that word order directly as Il direttore essendo assente sounds very clunky and unnatural in Italian.
How does the subject of the gerund work here, since it's different from the main clause?
Normally, an Italian gerund must share the same subject as the main verb (which is noi / "we" in abbiamo rimandato). The "absolute gerund" is the exception to this rule: it allows the gerund clause to have its own independent subject (il direttore) to explain the cause or background of the main action.
Is this the most common way to say this in everyday conversation?
Not usually. The absolute gerund is elegant and heavily used in written or formal Italian. In everyday speech, a B2 speaker would more likely use a causal conjunction like siccome (since) or dato che (given that) followed by the imperfect tense: Siccome il direttore era assente, abbiamo rimandato il progetto.
What happens to the grammar here if the subject is plural, like "i direttori"?
